I know there are a few people looking at Mason & Hamlin pianos. A local dealer is changing lines and has (4) new Masons available pretty darn cheap...Hopefully someone here will be able to take advantage of this opportunty.

The dealer is very reputable (I bought my BB from him a few years ago).

Details:

M&H-- "A" Ebony Polish---$23,200 (#90631)

"A" Monticello Ebony polish---$29,000 (#91160)

"A" Monticello Satin Mahogony w/piano disc 228---$30,500 (#91133)

"BB" Satin Mahogony---$35,000 (391177)

These are new pianos w/full factory
warranty. The dealer s in the Detroit area---price includes shipping and setup (local-Detroit area)

Outstate shipping/setup can be arranged through this dealer.

I've played all 4 of these pianos--no issues--all are worthy.

Please write me for details--I'll put you in direct contact with the owner of the dealership.

Wow! eek

Run, walk or maybe fly to Michigan.

Even tho it is funny to consider a 20-30+ thousand dollar piano "pretty darn cheap" wink ,
these prices are worth a serious look for anyone who is shopping for an M&H.

given the popularity of the M&H on this board, one wonders why a dealer would let this line get away...

'cuz this board ain't the general piano buying public! wink

Seriously, when shelling out money north of 20K, which manufacturer do most folks think about - Steinway, of course. You can argue about the quality/price ratio all day, but nobody can argue with the effectiveness of their marketing. And how many people who buy Steinways, can actually do justice to my little Nordiska?

And when it comes down to trying to raise money for a new piano in the church, or for the school, brand names open wallets.

Mason&Hamlin is a wonderful piano, especially the BB. But sometimes, especially in limited markets, they are just too unknown to compete on the high end, and too expensive to compete in the middle.

My .02 cents.

If they gave them away, the pianos would become...

Freemasons

Maybe we could put a little red fez on them

Jolly,

Maybe it's just my perception but I have found Mason & Hamlins to be very well known, at least among those who play piano, even in small US markets while some of the European brands (Estonia, Petrof, and such)are less known.

Disclaimer: I'm certainly no expert!

Remember, while Mason & Hamlin are very well known among piano players and well liked, most people that purchase pianos don't actually play piano and the prestige factor plays a very important part, and Steinway has a much more prestigious name (Not that it doesn't deserve the recognition it receives).

Out of curiosity, what lines are the dealer switching to?

bcarey,

I would agree, that amongst those "in the know" M&H is a well respected, well known piano. But as William88 pointed out, of all pianos sold, how many are bought by pianists?

The average Joe knows only about Steinway, Yamaha, and maybe Baldwin, I would surmise.

Most likely this particular dealer had problems selling high end pianos. Probably they didn't move enough M&H in order to keep the dealership. And somebody else in the area is interested in the line.
So, now he opt to give them away, before selling them for cost, to the new dealer. This is, if they don't belong to the flooring company.

I really have a problem with this kind of post. Although I'm not a M&H dealer, if a person in the market for a M&H or somebody who recently bought one read this. It will screw a fellow dealer.

This is really interesting, I consider M&H as good as Steinway, whoever people pay full retail for Steinways when M&H dealers they have to discount on the piano. Perhaps M&H should rearrange the guidelines with their dealers. That way this pianos will get the respect they deserve.

MAT D, In your profile said that you are into music production.

I wonder what is your incentive to put people in contact with the dealer?

Are you grateful because they sold you the BB you own for more than this?

Or maybe your music productions really suck, so you are scrapping for business at local dealers?

Perhaps that was the normal business practices of this dealer. Sell M&H always like if they were dropping the line. That is why you bought " yours "there .And now you are just thankful to them.

Who knows what's your deal?

Lovepianos,

Why question Mat's motives?

Some folks on the piano world forum might appreciate the information.

Why must Mat have a "deal"?

FWIW, I can vouch for these pianos and the dealer who is selling them. He carries other fine pianos as well, such as Bosendorfer and Estonia and has a successful business with three stores in the Detroit area. He is discontinuing carrying M&H because he has several other high end lines. He is a straight talking gentleman and I have confidence in his honesty and integrity. The pianos are superbly prepped.

As stated on the other thread, two are already sold, two left to go. Run, don't walk, to check them out.

FWIW, Mat initially discreetly offered to share information about these pianos with others on the forum in a previous thread by email only - exhibiting sensitivity and decorum in my view. I am wrapping up a piano search and found the information he provided very helpful - especially as a MH A was one of the top considerations for me. I greatly appreciated the tip and think that a forum such as this can be an excellent place to share such information amongst serious buyers who are taking the time to research and learn, and who genuinely appreciate fine piano tone and feel - the forum community if you will. These types of deals are rare and this is a genuine close-out from a reputable dealer. Best that such pianos go to people who can appreciate them and who perhaps would have been forced into a another line had this opportunity not come up. Perhaps a young family will have an altogether different musical experience growing up with this piano rather than a third tier instrument.

The dealers on the site may cringe a little - but this type of information sharing is appreciated, particularly as it truly reflects a one-time opportunity and not everyday prices of some undercutting mega-store, and the long term effects on the dealer network would be minimal. In an altruistic sense, I am happy to see four Masons going to people who otherwise may not afford them.

Lovepianos, I have known Mat through correspondance for something like four years. He was one of the original members here, before it changed hosts and before I even joined on, which was over 4 years ago. I figure you don't know this, since you have only been an active member for a couple of weeks.

Lay off. I will vouch for Mat. He is a great guy and has generously offered professional advice to a number of people here, including myself. He does not solicit business for dealers. I know when he stumbled on this deal because he emailed me immediately, knowing that I was hoping to upgrade to grand piano in the not too distant future. It was the first time in all those years that he forwarded this kind of information to me.

In contrast, your attacking posts help nobody. Are there reasons for your bitter reply: Is business that bad? Is the competition driving you out? Pressure getting to you?

Lighten up.

Ryan

Stick around LP, and you can add Mat's post to a whole list of posts you aren't gonna like.

OUCH!!!!!!!!

Lovepianos-----so many assumptions! You know nothing of what you speak, sorry.

I don't have to defend my innocent posts & I won't--that's all i have to say.

BTW, my next client just walked in for a recording session so I'll have to cut it short...
