Just five? Zheesh, that's hard. An attempt and a favorite (representative) song from each:

- Miles Davis "Blue in Green"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdLc8-M259U

- The Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r4mJ3aEhHo

- Tom Waits - "All the World is Green"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GIAawSTisE

- Sufjan Stevens "Vito's Ordination Song"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k20kPqcllgs

- Led Zeppelin "Since I've been Loving You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaKSQgq-8vc

Just looking at this list feels inadequate. I mean, which Led Zeppelin song should I pick? Should I drop Tom Waits and throw in Django Reinhardt or the Talking Heads? How could I leave out all the great "world" music like Caetano Veloso or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Heck, I have a hard time limiting the list to five >genres< much less five great musicians within each.

This list, however, has music that I go back to time and time again- with a concession made to relatively recent music. If I was stuck on a desert island, I suppose having the combine work of each of these musicians (which I almost own) would keep me happy for a good long time- that or the Beethoven Piano Sonatas.

I love her voice but I had no idea Nina Simone could do this at the piano. Forgot to add her to my list.

I'm so ashamed! I totally forgot Nina Simone. She's a very good pianist, IMHO. She studied at Julliard for a spell.

That might be one of my greatest piano related accomplishments. :-)

I'm kicking Harry James (sorry!) off the list for Nina Simone.

I was fortunate to see Harry James at a small club in Costa Mesa, Calif. just a few months before his death. I went in not expecting much, just humoring my date, but Harry was fantastic that night. One of the best live performances I've ever seen, of any genre.

Captain Beefheart is also on that live performance list! It was in Evansville, Ind. The show was Frank Zappa and some '70s boogie band was the opening act. After the boogie band finished, 80% of the crowd left, so there were just a few hundred left around the darkened stage. Suddenly, a mournfully wailing soprano sax started up, then a single spotlight on stage. Out came the Captain in a yellow and black rugby shirt, looking like a bumble bee with a silver stinger. It was a welcome surprise.

Brad, I'm so happy you're a fan of Zeppelin. Glad to know I'm not the only one on this forum. Also, I smiled when I clicked your link and saw that it was 1973 live. That's the best one!

I'm aware now. Still, I categorize Zeppelin fans into two groups. Those who know the hits and only listen to the studio recordings, and those who primarily listen the live stuff -- because that's where it's at.

It would be nice if there were more live stuff (myriad bootlegs aside). What's there is all fantastic, but there needs to be more. Also, I find No Quarter to be one of their very best live tracks, yet irritatingly neither How The West Was Won nor DVD contain versions of it. The version on The Song Remains the Same is great, however, as are some of the boot versions I have (sound quality aside).

Working on:
Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 ("Waldstein")
Chopin - Op. 9 No. 3 in B major

I agree, but, The Hound, No Quarter wasn't written yet in 1972. grin

Ah (and good point about HTWWW), but "DVD" contains performances from various eras (including shows which did contain No Quarter). It should have featured somewhere in that set, dammit! smile

Oh yeah. I forgot about that DVD. I had it when I was younger. Who knows why they didn't include No Quarter. But there's a lot of stuff they didn't include. Oh well.

Re: Nina Simone - Love or Leave me

I love her playing in this. Very Thelonius Monk-like.
