A small piece I wrote recently.

Hi, Polyphonist. Glad you're back. Could you make a midi of this?

I'm hesitant to post the MIDI file for this because it doesn't do justice to the piece at all - a lot of inner voices get drowned out, and some of the dynamics don't seem to have registered. For some reason this MIDI seems to be a lot worse than the ones I've created upon request for my other pieces. Nevertheless, here it is, in all its doubtful glory.

It's okay. Not your best work but I like when the left hand arpeggiates downwards.

Oh no! Joel thinks it's not my "best work"! I guess that means I'd better take it down now...

Honestly, who are you to judge whether this is my best work when you've only seen maybe 2 others?

The bad MIDI might be the problem, by the way. Or not. I don't care either way.

The left hand arpeggiates downward through most of the piece. Seriously, if you make a negative comment it's most helpful to the composer if you offer specifics as to why. As it is, your comment isn't really helpful.

Steve: I just feel that the piece isn't effectively concise the way his etude was. This is just my opinion. It really means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Polyphonist: Settle down and learn how to handle a little criticism. Remember when you told me you didn't like my A minor piece? Did I flip out on you? No. Grow up.

The world is afraid of criticism these days. 200 years ago everyone was criticizing the heck out of everything. Even your beloved Chopin was criticized constantly, Polyphonist.



Who am I? I'm a musician with two ears and an opinion, that's who. It's not your best because your etude is a better piece, imo.

Wow, I never thought the day would come when I would be told to "grow up" by an 18 year old. By the way, not that it matters, but you ASKED me to tell you if I liked it.


I'm not afraid of criticism - least of all criticism that means nothing, Joel. And isn't it a little hypocritical of you to say "your beloved Chopin" when you idolize him and think he's the greatest of all composers?

I judge people by their words, not their age. You should do the same.

No, the point wasn't in "your" it was the fact that even a musician of Chopin's caliber got criticized.

Probably you have just misinterpreted it. In any case, your criticism was of such low quality that any further discussion of it is useless.

I'm going to let the other arguments rest. If you're insecure enough to feel the need to continue them, that's your prerogative, but do it with someone else.

You're correct. It was a very insignificant criticism. It shouldn't have gotten a single word out of you, but somehow, it did. I wonder why.

I think it sounds okay even in midi. Really interesting piece. Looks very simple on paper but once you ramp up the tempo it is not so simple. I think the brevity of this one contributes to its drama. Also tarantella reminded me of tarantula I suppose, it made me think of those spidery left hand crawls. Though I did just now look up the term do I see it's not actually spider-related.

Yes, I had no complaints on the midi.

The first of your works I've seen.
Has all the frenzy one would expect from a tarentella.
The harmonies are polite and well behaved but not uninteresting, which can be helpful in maintaining a hypnotic effect.

I think it just needs a performer to put it on stage.
