Last night the BBC recounted how Sir James Tyndall had worked out why the sky is blue while walking in the Alps and listening to sound carrying across the valleys.

In 1867 Tyndall delivered Sound: A Course of Eight Lectures at The Royal Institution in London. It's a fascinating document to download.

The Steinway's also had the examples set by Erard, Pape, and Chickering regarding the form, detail, and manufacturing techniques of a modern piano.
