I've recently played a Yamaha N2 hybrid and a Yamaha NU1 hybrid. Both had too shallow key dips that were noticeably aggrevating to say the least. I didn't measure them but according to Yamaha key dips on acoustics should be 10mm. However, I did a visual and then immediately went over to a Yamaha CX2 and looked at the key dip and it appeared to be deeper. Playing it verified my visual.

1. Has anyone else noticed this key did problem with Yamaha hybrids?

2. Can the key dip on hybrids be adjusted by a technician without major expense? Yamaha says "no" to this latter question.

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

Googled this.... a Yamaha CX2 is a high end audio pre amp.

Can I try some of that medication you're taking?

I just measured it on my NU1. It is 10mm. I think it is shallower than that of a Roland PHAIII and deeper than that of a Kawai RM3, from memory and not measuring it. Acoustic grand Steinways, according to quick Google, vary from 9.75-10.5mm. The NU1 is comparable to that of my teachers acoustic upright, a Kawai K3 I think.

On the digital forum we seem to be OCD about measurements of actions. Let your fingers, and ears, be your guide.

A part of adjusting to any new instrument includes getting used to the key dip. If it bothers you, then perhaps this is not the piano to choose. Have you looked at Kawai or Roland?

Not of much help but the key travel of Kawai MP6 (RH action) is exactly 10mm.

Mine`s 10mm (ghs) but when I was a kid, all the pianos I played were different. By quite a long way as it happened.. but we didn`t have millimetres in those days did we?

I regularly play a Kawai acoustic grand and a Kawai acoustic upright. The travel on the former is way, way longer. Life is tough for pianists.

Nope....smallest measurement was dinosaur paces. We came up with that one the hard way.

Up until recently I was using a Casio px-150 and have recently got the kawai VPC1. With the two kbds next to each other I could have sworn the Casio was deeper by a little bit. In fact they both seem to be 10mm (I don't have a gauge or an eye for anything more accurate) but a reliable measurment is confounded by what happens at the bottom of the keybed where there is compressibility (felt?) and even a tiny bit of flexing going on (pivot?).

In addition, I think the length of the key to the pivot can make a difference in the feel of the keydip.

Yes, I'm sure that's right. Somewhere I've got one of those cheapo draper steel rulers with a depth gauge. I'll try this test again, while applying 'similar' force (maybe just the weight of the gauge) to each board.
