I have heard the piece on the attached link many times but am having a mental block. Can someone please help identify the first piece played:

I figured it out.

The music at 2:50 could only have been written by Schubert.

The figurations at 6:20 could only have been written by Liszt.

I searched for "Schubert Liszt waltz" and found this identification:

It's a Liszt transcription of a Schubert waltz.

Liszt wrote nine "Soirées de Vienne," each one containing transcriptions of several of Schubert's very short Waltzes, Ländler, and German Dances. The originals are in Schubert's Opp. 9, 18, 33, 49, 50, 67, 77, 91, and 127.

This is "Soirée de Vienne" No 6.

Actually I'm surprised you needed to go through that, because it's a fairly well-known piece, including that it was a favorite of that guy whose recording you found.

.....and going further back, Josef Lhevinne, from whose recording I first knew the piece.

But really it's more impressive when you can figure it out as you did, than if you knew the piece.

BTW, if I didn't know the piece, I think the beginning would have made me be thinking Rachmaninoff.

Thanks... It did sound familiar, especially the theme at 2:50; that's what drove me to figure it out.

As for "that guy whose recording [I] found"... It does sound like his kind of piece. He probably knew it his whole life. Just something else I don't have in common with him....
