I like interesting stories, especially if they have an "underdog" or "overcoming advertsity" element to them. Jimmy Amadie is in his 80s. He is a jazz pianist who couldn't play for several decades because of tendonitis. So he taught jazz instead and wrote a couple of cool books. If you want to learn how extended chords and tensions work, I highly recommend his book "Harmonic Foundation of Jazz", it does an excellent job of teaching that stuff. I believe it's out of print, and hard to come by, so you end up paying a premium for bootlegged copies of it on Amazon. If you'd like a copy, contact me and I'll see if I can arrange for a legit and cheaper alternative.

Surgery allows him to play a little bit nowadays. If you go to his website, you can listen to streaming audio of his recent recordings. He plays pretty nicely, although to be honest I'm not a big fan of his staying in the upper registers all the time, but nonetheless I've got a couple of his albums and will listen them out once in a while.

Jimmy Amadie

Like I said I'm not a huge fan of his bebop lines, but I very much like the way he harmonizes the changes.

Here are some interesting comments. It's fun reading through this type of stuff. As one reviewer says, there isn't any post bop stuff in Amadie, probably because he grew up playing in the 50s, and that's the style he assimilated.

On a different note, playing jazz is like playing racquetball - the older players are better. Take a listen to Amadie and his group of old fogies, they swing pretty good.
