Does anyone have experience with the S.W. Miller piano company? I'm looking at a 1909 Miller upright in very good condition. It needs some tuning, but the action is very good, no cracks in sound board, but it sounds funky. It's against the wall in the middle of a room with a 12 foot open pitched roof. The piano is centered under the apex of the roof. Not sure if that is affecting the sound.

The lower bass strings are rather dead sounding. My best guest, even though the sound board is in good shape, i.e. no cracks, maybe it was never a "winner" to begin with?

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

- Rick

Learning to play the piano, tweaking my 1907 Ivers Pond upright, and mostly playing a Yamha C7 because of its predictability.

You have more or less answered your own questions, I think.

- 100+ year old piano, consumer grade when new
- dead bass strings
- "funky" tone (bridge and/or soundboard problem?)

Similar pianos are given away for the taking, or "come with the house" when you buy a house. Certainly not worth a fortune; have a tech check it out if you are serious about it.
