I have a friend with an old upright they moved up into their cabin, which is in a high-altitude, dry climate. The piano, predictably, dried out, so I suggested they put a glass or two of water in it. After a couple of weeks, the water began evaporating at a steady pace, and the piano rebounded somewhat.
We refer to it as the piano "drinking."

I had similar witnessing from a colleague in mountains.
2or 3 jar of water, he said the result is audible and the water evaporate, need to be replaced every 3 weeks or so.
Old pianos, generally. I understand the piano "drinks" even if it does not seem to make sense, it is in an enclosed environment.

Yes, but to put a lid on it? Isn't that expecting a bit too much from condensation?

I understood it was a grand. in that case even if that sound horrible keeping the lid closed is the most efficient way to give some moisture to the instrument.

I have a grand, and during the winter months I keep a big ass bowl of water under the soundboard.It helps. (I can tune the thing anytime I want but I have better things to do)

Yep. Some of the places I've played, you might do just as well leaving the tip jar inside the piano.

Quite often the customer has forgotten the jar was there when the rug installers needed to move the piano. Then it does indeed "tip" with disastrous results!
