Der Doppelganger, a poem from Buch der lieder of Heine, is set by Schubert as the 13th of Schwanengesang cycle. The piece I played is the Liszt transcription.

Doppelganger is a mythical figure. It is the phenomenon of seeing ones likeness. In German folklore it is thought as an omen of death, but Heine gives a different emphasis.

In the poem, we see a man, walking alone through deserted streets in the twilight. He passes his darling's house who has departed from the city long ago. There stands another man. He rings his hands for the force of his torment. When the moonlight falls onto his face, the man who has been walking sees his likeness.

The question remains: is the man who has been walking has returned to the spot where he has felt the pain of his love or the man standing at last reunites with his parted soul?

"Schubert's music brings tears to our eyes, without any questioning of the soul: this is how stark and real is the way that the music strikes us."
Adorno

Congratulations!! Your playing is very emotional and it's possible to notice perfectly where you create all the tensions of this piece, so I think you master it quite well!! laugh

Wonderful playing! Very eerie (as the piece should be). I personally opt for the ossia LH tremolandi at the end, but the way you play the original is great.

Very good ! Bravo!

It is good to see how you are maturing, technically, musically and artistically each day. You clearly have a very good understanding of the piece and Schubert's music in general.

Maybe the next step could be to setup a homepage and provide re-recordings of your former works with higher quality audio and on well tuned pianos. You might consider exchanging ideas on this with member Josiah Wilkinson (who is about the same age as you are) who have posted some good quality recordings recently. Just a thought.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

PS. (Your other Schubert recordings a few posts below are very good too !!)
