Shopping for a piano this way is unreal. It's the best way I've ever made a major purchase because it helps unravel the mystery of so many brands, and also helps clarify price points.

To sum my search, I'm looking at the K-2 or Hailun H1 at the low end (about $3K), but also have added the S-P at a higher price point where I've found an 8-year-old 118 for $5K, and may also consider a 114.

While I thought Schimmel was out of reach, for fun I played a new 130T the other day with a $23K price tag. It was exquisite. I then remembered that early in my search I saw a used Schimmel 130T for $9K, but didn't think much about it. So I called the dealer and asked. It's either 3 or 4 years old and was offered to me for $7K. There's no catches. It's supposedly in great condition and comes with a 5-year warranty. I'm looking at it in a day or two.

Is this a mirage or am I looking at a great deal? Can anyone help?

somewhere in the mid 300K range is all I remember. It really is only 3-4 years old.

Not a mirage so far.

Price seems exceptional. Be prepared to pay for a tech inspection out of pocket if you like it.

I own one so I'm completely biased... let me just get that "out there"--

If, and only if, the piano checks out ok with an independent tech, it's a steal of a deal. I would never sell my two-year used, year 2000-built model 130T for anywhere approaching that little money!

I'd bring a tech along and your checkbook and move quickly before someone who's shopping U1's and K6's in your area swoops in and snatches it (or reads this thread and tries to figure out where it is). If it were to my liking, I'd buy it for $7k in a snap though I have absolutely no need for another upright piano... let us know how it turns out.

What does "didn't think much about it" mean, Caz? "I saw a used Schimmel..." could mean that you literally saw it in person and tried it out and didn't think much of it... in which case the alluring price is meaningless, if it didn't punch your buttons. But maybe "I saw a used Schimmel and didn't think much about it" means you were aware that it was for sale but ruled it out before playing it.

In any event, the piano is clearly worth auditioning... but have a tech inspection before getting too emotionally/financially invested in it.

It was out of my price range when I originally started shopping as well as a little larger than I was looking for, so I didn't give it much consideration. My budget and perception changed as my shopping continued.

(This is my first posting so be gentle). I am proud owner of a shiny black Schimmel 130T that I bought in 1999 from Rick Baldassin in Salt Lake City. I bought it for $12,000 brand new, and have been extremely happy with it. It has clear, beatuful, singing tone, very powerful for an upright. The adjustable bench Schimmel made to go with it is the best-built I've ever seen with any piano. I read the Larry Fine book (old version) cover to cover, obsessed, visited many stores, played many uprights including Charles Walter (good), Weinbach (very good), and some unamed other higher-end makes for about two years prior to settling on it. Until I can upgrade to a grand (working on it), this baby is a keeper! WIth the euro/dollar imbalance, European makes will only increase in cost so $7 grand if it's in good shape is probably fair in my amateur opinion.

Hi Folks,

After doing my homework, it's really clear that $7K is a super price. Basically, we're in a down market and just as housing prices can be depressed, so can piano prices. Unfortunately, I've also decided to stay within my budget that maxes out at $5K, and is preferably less, so I'm passing on it.

If anyone is interested, I'll let you know where it is located in a PM. A few years from now, I'm probably going to wish I stretched my budget. My only solace is that I still expect to find a very functional piano in the $3K to $5K range, although it probably won't match the 130T for $7K.

TheCaz, I shouldn't tempt you but if the market stays down what is the harm of offering $5,500...

Good thought, but I've already opted for another piano (Albert Weber 48). A Schimmel is not in my future.

TheCaz, please excuse some kidding about the Schimmel, it is easy for me to suggest ways to spend your money... ha, ha. Congratulations and enjoy your Albert Weber! thumb
