I find it interesting that he doesn't seem to use his right thumb at all! I guess there's no need when you can span an octave between your 2nd and 5th fingers!

I was questioning this other day.. jazz players seem to pay less attention to "proper" technique. But maybe that's because this is right technique for jazz.. I dunno.

Hi, bellamusica! Yes, a good treatment of a not-very-interesting piece -- kind of a shame IMO that Brubeck is remembered for that one, with all of the other stuff he wrote.

I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked to me like the pianist does not HAVE a right thumb -- which of course makes his efforts all the more extraordinary!

Brubeck did not write Take Five.

Some of the Youtube comments refer to a missing right thumb, but he does have one. It's clearly visible and used in several of his other videos.

rintincop: Thanks for posting the second version. I hope you won't mind if I say that the first one is far, far more enjoyable to me. The first is rhythmically strong, has some interesting reharmonizations, and is interesting melodically. The second I find rhythmically dull, he plays the same left hand bass line the whole time, nothing happening harmonically, and his melodies seem to be just a series of runs. It seems like he views the piece as a vehicle to play all the fast runs he's practiced.

I'm sure some will love this version!

I was wondering the same thing at first, so I started watching closely and I did catch a glimpse of his right thumb here and there, so I know he has one! But yeah, it almost seems like it's missing.

He has a disability, so he plays in his unique way. Very talented.

Wow, the way he uses his 2-5 fingers on the RH is so intersting! (I know, everyone else has commented also). I am the "stiffest" between my 2-3 and 3-4 fingers so that is really something. Thanks for posting this!
