Hi all,

I am new the forums and would like your alls input. I am looking into buying my first new grand piano. I'd like to buy a Kawai GX-6. I recently went to the local Kawai dealer to get price and try to negotiate prices with them.

Here are the quotes they gave me.

[list]
[*]GX-5 - $32,000
[*]GX-6 - $36,000

[*]RX-5 - $30,000
[*]RX-6 - $33,000

When i gave them a counter offer, they basically nodded at my price (26k) yet kept their prices the same, saying they are already quite low. Are these prices at all fair/how do i know if i am getting a fair price? I live in a rural area, would these prices not be competitive in today's market? I walked out contemplating about what i should pay. I've read Larry Fine's book and checked out the blue book of pianos (GX6-$53k and RX6-$42k, respectively). Both of those give prices higher than what the kawai dealer offered me. I am looking to pay for a piano in the mid to upper 20k. Anything much over 30k would be much out of my price range. Should i look at other kawai dealers or what should be my next step, (give a better asking price)? Any input would be much appreciated.

You're not going to get a GX-6, Kawai's new 7' model, for what you're looking to spend. Nor should you expect to.

Hi Bill - Us'uns welcome y'alls to Piano World.

Those prices are incredible! Are you sure you didn't drop all of the prices by $10K?

According to The Brand Spankin' New "Piano Buyer," here is what I figured. These prices are 15% off SMP.

GX-5 - $40,792
GX-6 - $45,552

RX-5 - $37,052
RX-6 - $41,302

Finding any of these in the mid-upper $20K range would be the deal of the century. The prices you have been offered are quite spectacular.

I'm sure you know that the RX series has been discontinued and there are some bargains available. However...

Good luck,

Marty in Minnesota

Yes, if I saw such a price on a GX6, I wouldn't even try to bargain - I'd slap down my payment and write down my address.

Even looking at the previous Piano Buyer supplement, you're being quoted in excess of a 30% discount from the SMP price (read the introduction to the pricing section for more info) on those RX series pianos. Trying to snatch one of those up for $26k (new) is a pipe dream at any dealer I've been to in the US.

Some folks don't like negotiating a deal, while others do. When I bought my piano, I didn't negotiate at all, but I made everyone aware of my budget. No haggling was necessary, and I felt like I got a very good deal anyway. Some sellers of big-ticket items have more of a "no-haggle" policy than others do.

You either need to adjust your budget or start asking what they could do for an RX3/GX3... You aren't making the mistake of buying a piano without playing a prepped one first, right??

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Thanks for the responses and the wake up call on what i should expect to pay.

@ Marty

Nope, those were prices given to me when i visited. I've looked at the Piano Buyer and the Piano Blue book and decided something was askew since the prices were not even close to what the dealer gave me. Hence i came on the forums to get a better view from more experienced people.

@ Terminaldegree

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately the dealer has very low inventory and only has an RX-1 on the floor. I still need to travel to a larger dealer/city to even play a more substantial piano.

Overall i'm not worried about spending the idea of 36k, i was more worried of not getting a fair price.

Hey, if he goes for it. I'll get a GX-6 too. Yeah, that's probably not going to happen.

My dealer, who I think has awesome prices quoted me $28,432 for a GX-3 (out the door). He didn't have anything bigger but you should be able to figure out the progression based on the % difference in MSRP.

So $36K for a GX-6 seems pretty close. You might be able to knock off a couple points if you don't use your Discover Card.

Hi Bill,

With a budget of ~35K you will be able to find a great piano. The prices you were quoted are extraordinary, however. Those are major pianos for minor prices. Hope that the dealer stays on drugs!

wink

You should probably ignore the Piano Blue Book as not being up to date and not having an SMP. For the Piano Buyer you need to, as others have suggested, read the introductory material on how to use the SMP to estimate a fair selling price. Then you will understand why the dealer's offer was so much less than the SMP.

Bill,

I'm confused by your edit to your original post. You have marked the quotes you received as "[list]". List would be MSRP as is commonly referred. Generally, the "SMP" is the top of the range for "street price." The terms are vague, at best.

What were you trying to convey with the edit?

The general consensus is that you were given exceptional quotes for the models you have listed. If I read correctly, you have received confirmation that you are being treated with great consideration.

Please help us out in understanding exactly what you are asking.

He was not referring to list price, but rather was trying to produce a formatted bullet point list using UBBCode. For whatever reason, it didn't work right. Here's how it should have appeared:
  • GX-5 - $32,000
  • GX-6 - $36,000
  • RX-5 - $30,000
  • RX-6 - $33,000

Thanks all for you input. I'll let you know what happens in the future.
