Having a livestream to watch is really terrific, so I hate to have a criticism....but it would be really nice if they had a camera angle showing the pianist's face for the concertos. (They had one for the semifinal recitals.) The closest we get to the pianist's face here with the concertos is a sort of partial side view, from behind the right shoulder (the keyboard view).

I just realized they changed something....the pianists were supposed to be conducting from the piano for the Mozart portion of the finals. But there's a conductor! I wonder what happened?!

The three finalists (reduced from the six who just played Mozart concertos):

Rodolfo Leone (Italy)
Akihiro Sakiya (Japan)
Dmitry Shishkin (Russia)

No surprise to see Leone and Shishkin there, they were wonderful. I would have thought Mazo or Chistiakova deserved the final spot just a bit more than Sakiya, though.

Groan....the finals will be 2 Rach 3s and a Tchaik 1. (Apparently it's the law!) I was going to watch, but now I don't even really care.

What's wrong with Rach 3 and Tchaik 1?

Nothing against the other pianists but I lost interest when Michelle Candotti was out. If she were going to play one of those concertos I would be eager to hear it again and for the 1001st time!

I am sure that as with her fellow Italian Alessio Bax she will eventually have a significant career. I can still remember him well from 13 years ago, and I knew then that he would succeed to the extent which he has done.

Yeah, what terrible, awful pieces of "music". Who in their right mind would pick those???

I really liked Maria Mazo, maybe i am biased. But her Mozart was in no way inferior to the other finalists'. I liked Shishkin in the prelims but i think he was not as good in the finals (Mozart). I didn t see Sakiya but my teacher said she really liked his Mozart.

I was wishing to see Maria Mazo in the final three, but i do think her age (31) works against her in this kind of very close decisions.

I was also discussing with a friend , he says it's very good that they have the finalists play Mozart. I do agreee to a certain extent, sure, with Mozart, a pianist has nowhere to hide, you either make art or just hit notes and it's a thin line, but there have been great pianists not specially keen on Mozart. Tchaikovsky and Rach will give a clearer picture of each one's abilities and versatility. Although i would have preferred them to play something less often performed.

Watching movements II and III of Rch 3 by Sakiya ... lacking a better term, this guy is a bada..!

Funnily, i saw Nobuyuki Tsujii at the Proms this summer, and i have to say Sakiya's is just on a different level of musicianship in my opinion (no pun to Tsukii, i just didn't like his set at all).

Truly impressed with Sakiya, he's set the bar very high.
