Do you mean "file" as in reshape the hammer?

I would check for moth larvae before it gets really expensive. You may need pest control before a piano technician.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

in my experience, when the moth have attained the hammers they have eaten most of the other felts.

they install generally under the keys
eat the front punching
raise in the front bushings and eat the balance punching,
raise in the balance mortise.

I am unsure how they go from the keys to the action, but rarely see action cloth eaten by larvae without the keyboard being attacked first.

hammers are exceptionally attacked or on really very old pianos.

dampers, at a certain stage all felts have been eaten, if you vacuum the piano almost nothing is left wink

apparently it is not too difficult to get rid of the moths we have here. (more difficult with the ones that eat floor and such)

Thank you boys for your answer, but I want to dissimulate the holes leaved by the moth without affect the sound who produce the hammer. Here in argentina, we must to import these hammers and they not to cheap!

I understand this thread to be about filling holes in hammer felt as a result of moth damage. I have never heard of filling these holes. It would be purely visual, as there is nothing you can do to structurally or acoustically restore/repair the felt that has been eaten.

Any time wasted on trying to hide the moth holes from unsuspecting customers is better spent doing work which will actually improve the instrument's performance.

you didn't mention the piano. Is it a Steinway or a Whitney spinet..If it's a cheap piano, I would pay someone to haul it to the dump
