I started to, but got distracted - I hope to catch up a bit in the next day or so.

Here's a link to the stream and archives, if people are interested. How to find it from the home page in English is a little odd...

A bit. I've probably managed to listen to 1/3 of the semifinalists (there are quite a few of them). It'll be interesting to see what concertos the finalists play - the choices are much wider than the Cliburn:

- Bartók Concerto for Piano No. 3
- Beethoven Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
- Brahms Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 and 2
- Chopin Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 and 2
- Ravel Concerto in G major
- Rachmaninov Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 and 4, or Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43
- Prokofiev Concerto for piano and orchestra No 2, 3 and 5
- Liszt Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 and 2
- Tchaikovsky Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1
- Ligeti Concerto for Piano and Orchestra

And before the Grand Final concertos, a Mozart concerto, conducted from the piano bench. That should be mildly interesting!

The guy I'm watching now, Dmitry Shishkin, is good. His hands are enormous. Even bigger than Valentina Lisitsa's, if that's possible.

I really like this recording. As well it is Liszt so critical judgment is a bit disarmed!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idMmPi4d1Uo

The description says "Michelle Candotti, 1996" which is a bit confusing - I think she would have been less than one year old then!

But why does the piano have such a glassy tone in the Chopin concerto set as with the one below? That isn't the way to show performers to their best advantage!

That is a lot of music to stream in the archives! It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'll be listening to some of the repertoire played by various hands - I just don't have time to hear all of it.

Candotti is fantastic with the octaves of the Apres une Lecture du Dante, and as well the delicato sections. Anyhow, I'm not voting . . . and the other players are quite formidable, much that is positive about their playing too can be written . . . the pianist who I always think is most promising in the end and should win a competition never does.

And I never identify who the particular pianist is because musicians are not supposed to criticize or comment upon each other in that way wink

I'm really liking Rodolfo Leone. Oops, just as I typed that he made a boo-boo in the Appassionata. Still, really like him.

The commissioned piece by R. Saunders - "Shadow" seems like a yawner. I disliked the commissioned piece for the Cliburn too.

What I would like to see is an improvisation section in the competitions. The pianists can improvise a composition or set of variations on a famous theme which is not disclosed until the start of the improvisation round. I could do it, and I think these pianists too could do it if they were to put their minds to it.

I've listened to the remainder of Michelle Candotti's playing which is available, she has a range of colour and quality of piano tone I haven't heard in a very long time - I could enjoy hearing her do a full length solo recital and without any wavering of interest.

If she were to take the Valentina Lisitsa approach with numerous youtube videos I think she would on that basis acquire quite a following in a relatively short period of time.

Hmm, Akihiro Sakiya's Reminiscences de Don Juan was way too messy. Lots of wrong notes.

Having a livestream to watch is really terrific, so I hate to have a criticism....but it would be really nice if they had a camera angle showing the pianist's face for the concertos. (They had one for the semifinal recitals.) The closest we get to the pianist's face here with the concertos is a sort of partial side view, from behind the right shoulder (the keyboard view).

I just realized they changed something....the pianists were supposed to be conducting from the piano for the Mozart portion of the finals. But there's a conductor! I wonder what happened?!

The three finalists (reduced from the six who just played Mozart concertos):

Rodolfo Leone (Italy)
Akihiro Sakiya (Japan)
Dmitry Shishkin (Russia)

No surprise to see Leone and Shishkin there, they were wonderful. I would have thought Mazo or Chistiakova deserved the final spot just a bit more than Sakiya, though.

What's wrong with Rach 3 and Tchaik 1?

Nothing against the other pianists but I lost interest when Michelle Candotti was out. If she were going to play one of those concertos I would be eager to hear it again and for the 1001st time!

I am sure that as with her fellow Italian Alessio Bax she will eventually have a significant career. I can still remember him well from 13 years ago, and I knew then that he would succeed to the extent which he has done.

Yeah, what terrible, awful pieces of "music". Who in their right mind would pick those???

I really liked Maria Mazo, maybe i am biased. But her Mozart was in no way inferior to the other finalists'. I liked Shishkin in the prelims but i think he was not as good in the finals (Mozart). I didn t see Sakiya but my teacher said she really liked his Mozart.

I was wishing to see Maria Mazo in the final three, but i do think her age (31) works against her in this kind of very close decisions.

I was also discussing with a friend , he says it's very good that they have the finalists play Mozart. I do agreee to a certain extent, sure, with Mozart, a pianist has nowhere to hide, you either make art or just hit notes and it's a thin line, but there have been great pianists not specially keen on Mozart. Tchaikovsky and Rach will give a clearer picture of each one's abilities and versatility. Although i would have preferred them to play something less often performed.

Watching movements II and III of Rch 3 by Sakiya ... lacking a better term, this guy is a bada..!

Funnily, i saw Nobuyuki Tsujii at the Proms this summer, and i have to say Sakiya's is just on a different level of musicianship in my opinion (no pun to Tsukii, i just didn't like his set at all).

Truly impressed with Sakiya, he's set the bar very high.
