Dear Friends,

I wanted to ask, especially those of you who have participated in professional/amateur competitions, what sorts of social or fun events do you/would you enjoy surrounding a competition?

I know open recitals and master classes tend to be popular but are there any unique experiences or events you have participated in or can think of that would be desirable for contestants to partake in?

Thanks and looking forward to some cool ideas.

-Marilyn

Marilyn,
I would encourage you to also post this on "Pianist Corner" (here's a link to it). That section gets much more traffic, and almost all the people who would know about this are over there.

Speaking for myself, I think the the very best and most important social events are a "welcome party," either right before the competition begins or on the evening of the first day, and a "closing dinner" after the finals. Many people also like the things you mentioned (recitals, master classes) but to me they aren't crucial at all and don't have much of a social aspect.

Hi Mark,
yes, we usually do have a dinner. I'm not sure if we have a welcome party (it's my first year working on the competition) but I will go ahead and post it there for more ideas! Thanks for your help! smile

Are you talking about the Chicago Amateur Competition? (I guess it's reasonable to assume grin but you didn't say so.)

I was at the first one, and there was indeed a welcome party.

By the way, wouldn't it be good first of all to look into what the competition has done in the past and find out how it went? (I think it would.) smile

I explicitly did not want to share what competition I was working on but thank you for letting me know. smile

I was the last one in the office so there was no one to ask. smirk

I was specifically looking for new and out of the box ideas people might have so if you would like to suggest some I'd be more than happy to share them with our committee! Thanks for your input and support and hope you can make it to the competition again this year!
