Someone is selling this clavinova on kijiji (IMAGE), but there's no information about the model or anything.

They are asking 300$ for it. It looks like a good price, but I would like to be sure before buying.

It's hard to tell what model it is and I doubt if anyone could give you the information you're looking for except the individual selling it.

Why not ask them?

Yamaha Clavinova CLP-154 or CLP-155 from 1994, about 19 years old.

Just 32 polyphony. Only the 155 has 3 brilliance settings.

CLP 155 is most likely. Year 1994. It`s vintage . . .

I stand corrected. I owned a Clavinova years ago and when the lid is closed they pretty much all look the same to me.

Unless you have a real hankering for this model - like you're a collector or just have a thing for this model - it's not really worth getting something that old. The risk of failure is just too great and the tech is so dated...

Again - to each his own if you really like this model- there are some pieces of vintage gear I have had to be "talked of the ledge" before I dropped some cabbage on them - so I understand the lure of certain instruments.

But for not much more you can get a brand new state-of-the-art instrument. JMHO.

Thanks for your inputs, but I'm not fond of any models in particular, I'm just looking for something cheap to practice on in my small appartment (accoustic piano is a no-go).

I also have a very low budget (poor student), so I'm browsing kijiji regularly in hope of finding a bargain.

If it's functional and sounds and feels good enough for you, and all the keys and pedals work, and you can use it for a year, make an offer! Tell him it's 20 years old and archaic, suggest $150 or something.

I would not give up on this offer even though it is an older model since Clavinova's have very good sounds and actions and I deliberately went out looking for a CLP-990M which I eventually found (private seller in New York) and paid $2k for it. It is well worth owning as long as everything is working, i.e., all of the keys/buttons/pedals are functional, etc.

If you can have it for only $150-$200 it's a steal!

Very true that even if its old tech, it can still be useful. It was probably used very lightly and not dragged from gig to gig, and if you decide you need a better sound, hook it up to some software! The top of the cabinet makes a great laptop rest . It looks like it's in good shape. The seller probably bought it, played it for a while, and then lost interest (though this is only a guess). If the action sounds* and feels good, and you can get it for $200 or less, I'd be tempted.

*play each key with varying degrees of force with the power off or volume at zero to check for any mechanical noise. Pay attention to the feel too. Play the keys very slowly, especially in the middle register, to check for any sluggish springs (Yamaha had a problem with this on late '90's models, but I'm not sure about later years).

With the volume turned up, play each key from ppp to fff to make sure all sensors are responding correctly. If a key doesn't react normally, a sensor may be dirty. Maybe not a deal-breaker for some Tech/DIY people like myself, but cleaning a dirty sensor is a process involving quite a bit of disassembly that you may want to pass on. Hopefully they kept that cover closed through the years.

With my sennheiser hd595 the sound is pretty neat, I really like the keyboard !
