How can Glen Gould get away with this? He sits in a dining chair not a piano stool and the chair is far too low for the piano so he sits doubled over and hums whilst he plays. Yet despite all this, he plays so wonderfully.

If I sat in a chair too low doubled over the keys I am sure my piano teacher would have something to say about it and make me sit at a high enough stool How can you play properly too low down?

You cannot possibly take this seriously. His playing is very good, but he looks so idiotic.

When you play as well as Gould, you too can sit however you want.

He had a good excuse adultpianist.......he was Canadian......(ducking from the wrath of the new moderator)

Problems with piano are 90% psychological, the other 10% is in your head.

Yes I suppose so. I doubt very much if he sat like that when he was a student. But as you say when you play as well as Gould. I guess when you have the talent you can play any way you like and it will still sound good. BUT what example is he setting for the young upcoming pianist? They will see him and think oh if Glen Gould can sit in a dining chair and hum then it must be ok to do so and they will try it too, only they don't have his technique or skill and it will all go pear shaped.

An ultra-favorite pianist of mine who plays on a very low bench is Evgeni Bozhanov. He brings his own bench and here he is:

Beginning 1:07 of this interview, he explains why he prefers a much lower bench:

Nonetheless, his playing is brilliant!! :-)

He set an example in the SOUND he produced, in the MUSIC and in the INTERPRETATION. How you sit isn't the whole of piano playing.

If he went up a few keys he might become Glen Mould.

That reminds me to sort out some of my old cheese.

You just replied yourself. He plays so wonderfully.

Even more so he sure was eccentric but WAY ahead of his time, thinking about the effects of recordings, etc (to the point that he stopped performing at some point I think). He was a thinker, not just a music making machine!

I sincerely doubt he was the least bit interested in setting an example for anyone.

Eccentric? Sure. But also a genius who left us with a lot of amazing music.

(I heard that Earlofmar......;) )

" . . . Around the same time, he injured his back as a result of a fall from a boat ramp on the shore of Lake Simcoe. This incident is almost certainly related to the adjustable-height chair his father made shortly thereafter. Gould's mother would urge the young Gould to sit up straight at the keyboard. He used this chair for the rest of his life and took it with him almost everywhere.
This famous chair was designed so that Gould could sit very low at the keyboard. The chair allowed him to pull down on the keys rather than striking them from above, a central technical idea of his teacher at the Conservatory, Alberto Guerrero."
