Montreal
A pretty cool thing happened this past weekend. I went out to a restaurant in Montreal with my girlfriend and when we got out of it, I noticed a piano laying right there on the sidewalk.

Nobody was around the piano so I thought I would get closer to see what it was all about. Well, there was a sign with something like "Piano of the street - play me!" written on it.

AS the sign suggested, I just sat down and started playing some pieces I've learned in the last couple months and a few people just started to gather around and cheer to the music.

This was such an experience for me seeing these people come together and listen to what I had to offer even if I'm still at the very beginning stage of my piano learning journey. I think they just came out of curiosity as you do not expect having a big upright on a corner of some street late in the evening. smile

I find it amazing that the city decided to install a few pianos for random people to play on it and share their love for music with total strangers.

Here is the link to the city's web page where you can learn more about this initiative (French only)

I wonder why Portland hasn't tried doing this. It seems like the kind of creative urban fun we're good at.

Is there a full list somewhere of all the cities that have tried this out?

Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.

It's a zany and sweet idea. Good for Montreal. Given Quebec's enviable commitment to the arts, there's probably even a budget to keep these pianos serviced!

We have those in Paris but there's always a huge crowd around them. And I don't know if I had the guts to play it if I ever got the chance.

I guess here they would be stolen or vandalized in no time... frown

We had them in Toronto last year. There is a list of cities at this site:

It looks like your Montreal pianos are part of a different initiative.

I played a few of the Toronto pianos---an assignment from my teacher. As I recall one of the pianos was locked up due to damage (vandalized?), but that was an exception.

There's been a similar initiative here (Fort Collins, CO) for a number of years.

I've never seen any vandalized or marked with graffiti, but it might happen. Weather is more of an issue, but people and businesses generally do a good job protecting the pianos.

I'd rather play badly than not at all...

We have an old piano in the garden of our vinyard. Rarely has anyone played it but it's there! The weather had destroyed it after 5 years but it still makes a sound. We will replace it next season.Old pianos are going free these days. People love to see it and just plonk a few notes as they walk past. Maybe we should try a kind of Piano Open Mic afternoon!

Hi Jean-Luc,

Here's a few more places where you might find them in Montreal - I had an email exchange with one of the guys overseeing this project a while ago, Julien Leblond.

St-Denis Marie-Anne,
St-Laurent Prince Arthur,

I haven't been to see any of the places, was just too busy this summer.
