If you had the choice which and why assuming both are exactly the same price, which they are (and that includes 3xpedal and stand for Kawai)

Both are great. I guess you have to ask yourself: Do you have any need for portability? Does 128 vs 256 polyphony matter to you (probably not)? Did you look at both specs side by side to see what matters to you?

And the big question... Did you play them both yet?

Well to be honest Marko I have played (read pressed the notes on the keyboard as I don't play yet) the Kawai CN34 (same key bed I am told).

Catch 22 I like the idea that the Kawai is portable but I also like the idea the Roland turns into a shelf to keep my 5 year olds sticky fingers off it (when unsupervised, spilt drinks ext.)

I like the idea of being able to move it but I also imagine by the time I am ready to perform I will want something else.

I know the 990f is an older model than the Kawai but is the Kawai more advanced besides triple sensors that I probably won't see the benefit of because, I want to learn pop piano rather than crazy fast classical, although I do love the romantic stuff (read clair de lune)

The Roland does not have a direct computer connection, ie, "to Host" USB like it`s update, the DP-90 and 90-S. It has MIDI connections though and loads of extra voices and rhythms.

Have you considered the Roland F-120? A few reasons:
- You will save some significant money
- You are a beginner
- very close to same furniture design as DP990F
- F-120 has SuperNatural
- you have a 5 year old that might have spill on any DP. Maybe go a little cheaper until you get better and the kid gets older

Thing is both of these pianos are on really good deals so on;y £200 more gets me either of the other 2

In that case, I would highly recommend the ES7 by experience only. IMO; sound and action are incredible, easily portable when needed, outstanding specs, works very well with software, recording, easy to use/program virtual technician, rock solid, and very nice looking if you care, etc. - I truly look forward to playing it everyday for hours on end. I honestly believe that it has made me a better piano player due to it's detailed accuracy and precision of sound and touch especially with good headphones.

I like it when you talk like the ES7 like that Marko I am close to pulling the trigger on it tomorrow and I am basically getting the stand and the 3x pedal free for the price I am paying

I can not and will not push you into the ES7. But I can tell you that you will be very happy if your final choice is either the Roland or Kawai. Both are exceptional pianos. It's just a matter of taste that only you can decide. Best of luck and don't sweat it ;-)

Usually the ES7 is compared with the Roland FP80 (or the older FP7F, also great). I haven't ever played the DP-990F and I know little about it but I have played the FP7F quite a bit. Be sure not to overlook it as you are comparing and searching around. You get PHAIII action instead of PHAII going that way.

If you had a gun to my head I'd take the ES7 too, though.

Its starting to look like the ES7 and I am getting an excellent deal

Getting a deal makes it very tempting I'm sure.

As an aside, I purchased a decent pair of headphones and really, really love the sound of my es7. My roomie played it the other day, having been wrestling with a grade 6 waltz on the acoustic upright and noted that the piece was easier to play. The action is wonderful. However, the sound through good headphones is...well, stellar.

I have decided on the ES7 I have put a deposit on it while I wait for a credit card to come that gives me 18 months interest free on purchases, I am paying £1136 ($1768.52) for the ES7 the proper stand and the triple pedal unit brand spanking new.

The card should be arriving Monday so I can settle the bill and arrange delivery

How is that for exciting?

I think the Kawai ES7 will bring a big smile to your face.

But the speakers are terrible...

Haha! Got you! :-) No, the speakers are good - clear and quite powerful.

I tend to go for the "Studio Grand" when I use the built-in speakers. The "Studio Grand" sounds really good when playing Yiruma's "River Flows In You" via the speakers. Try it for yourself! :-)
