I remember some time ago that someone (I'm thinking it was J. Biegel, but am not sure) mentioned Adele Marcus' "Setting Up Exercises" and I was curious about them, since she was something of a legend when I was younger, especially for producing technically well-grounded pianists.

Thanks to YouTube, I now know much more about them. This video goes through them one by one, and in the notes, gives a link to a copy of them. It's fascinating stuff, I think - the real nuts and bolts of what a famous teacher was teaching, in terms of technique.

Watching the video, the one aspect that struck me was Marcus's insistence on 1-4 for black octaves. Having heard about her reputation as a teacher, I'd guess that all her students used 1-4 for black octaves. No questions asked..... grin

It does, doesn't it? She could really play quite well.

I don't know at which point she developed that regime, though.

BTW, that Liszt seems to be disputed - some are saying it's really Anievas.

Apparently, these recordings are from some found in Marcus' closet at the time of her death and incorrect assumptions were made about who is actually performing. This according to the discourse at the YouTube site. Numbers on some of the unnamed discs seem to trace back to her student, Agustin Anievas.

I met Miss Marcus once, but never had the opportunity to hear her play, though I'm told by a friend that he heard her play a wonderful Chopin B minor sonata at a music teachers gathering. She had a score handy to which she referred when her memory failed.

As for her teaching and relationships with students, the reports I heard are legion and all negative, though some very fine pianists emerged from her studio. I was glad to read Biegle's appreciation of her.

Marcus was apparently a child prodigy, which makes me wonder if she actually did any of these exercises. I was surprised to learn that she taught technique. My understanding was that she only accepted students who were already technically secure. Interesting, though, nonetheless.
