A North Atlantic Island former...
Below is a bar of music, taken from a piece of music in the key of C major, with two turns in it:

[Linked Image]

Starting with the G beginning the third group of four notes, could someone venture a reading of how this sequence of notes should be 'decoded'?

One reading is as follows (the turn is in [square brackets]):

G-[Fsharp-G-Fsharp-E-Fsharp]-G-A
B-[A-B-A-Gsharp-A]-B-Csharp

This is based on the convention of playing a 5 note turn starting on the indicated note when the turn is directly positioned over it. Using a 4 note that omits the indicated note, the sequence would be:

G-[G-Fsharp-E-Fsharp]-G-A
B-[B-A-Gsharp-A]-B-Csharp

How does this look to others?

P.

Wow. That's really poor notation and I can see why you are confused. I'd go with your first idea because it makes sense musically. It would help if you would identify the piece and publisher. I might have another edition that is more clear.

Best regards,

Deborah

just singing the line it seems like

G [a-g-F#] G A
B [c#-b-A] B C#

where the bracketed notes were triplet 32nds

would be pleasing and fall nicely under the hand... but as to what's indicated, a larger section to consider would have more clues.

Hmm, well when a turn is placed above the note, it often starts on the note above - which is also the note preceding the main note. That's true in the baroque period - what piece is this?

If so, the question becomes, do you play the upper note twice (G - G,F#,E,F#) or just tie them? Seems like you want a slight gap but I'm not at a piano to try it.

Land of the never-ending music
Andy is right. When the turn is above the note it usually starts on the note above.

Depending on the tempo, I would most-likely play this: G-F#-E-F# G A | B-A-G#-A B C#

The slower the tempo, the more I would be willing to consider the extra G:

G F#-G-F#-E-F# G A | B A-B-A-G#-A B C#

The most important thing is clarity. smile
