Hi guys. I got minihost up and running and I am able to record my VST audio directly as a wav file. But I wanted to know how to record both video(of my hands playing the piano). And sound? Maybe with the use of a webcam taking video? How do those guys on YouTube sync the two together. Do they record the video with the webcam and the sound separately and then combine them? When I say guys on YouTube I'm referring to the dude with the kawai vpc1 testing out galaxy vintage D I'm black and white video.. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fjuzC_KxQncAmong other videos on YouTube. Any help will be appreciated . Thanks.

You can edit a soundtrack (wav) and a video together with, for example, Windows Movie Maker which might be included in your Windows installation. I say might as this varies a heck of a lot. Sometimes you have to get it from Microsoft. Then, in later versions of Windows they replaced the original with something called Windows Live (I think) Movie Maker.
That should be a free route. If you want to pay money to the likes of Adobe (my pet hate software company) you can use Premiere to do the same thing.

Mta88, You can record webcam video directly from a webcam to a video editor and then edit it using the that software. Right now I have Premiere Elements (I dropped my Adobe CC subscription) and CyberLink PowerDirector: http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector-ultimate/features_en_US.html. I prefer PowerDirector. That said, AFAIK all webcams under about $900 are ultra-wide angle. You won't get that angle of view from any consumer webcam. If you set a consumer webcam on the end of the keyboard and pointed down the keyboard like in that shot, you'd see the keyboard, your hands, your body, and probably have the room you're in. The other issue is depth of field. That video has an ultra-shallow depth of field. I'm pretty sure that it was taken with something like a Canon or Nikon full-frame camera. My Panasonic GH3 MIGHT get depth of field that narrow, but I doubt it. The bottom line is that a webcam is not the tool of choice for this. A better choice would be a video camera or hybrid camera (like a DSLR or u4/3 camera) with a good zoom to frame the keyboard properly. You'd capture the video to the camera's media card, import it to a video editor (like PowerDirector) and edit the video. You can merge the video and audio either in a DAW like Reaper or in the video editing software. PowerDirector and Premiere can do this. I've always used my video editor for merging audio, but I don't know if DAW software would be better. Good luck with your project. Regards, Dan.

I just used my home video camera on a tripod. Then you replace the audio with the wav file you produce using video editing software. Once you get the audio synced up you are good to go.

I'm not him but I shoot with both a video camera and a sound recorder and then merge them. Record both sound and video with the camera so I can align the extra audio tracks I import into the video editor by eye, looking at the waveforms. Then either mute the camera audio track or, if your software supports it, apply volume envelopes to both so you can mix them together to get things like audience sound into the final video. I use Vegas but any video editor that can do these basic things will work. Howard

Wow ok.
It is two separate steps then. Wasn't sure.
So basically I just gotta use something like adobe premiere to merge audio and video..
Was hoping there was a program that could record the video while I record the audio from the vst, taking the lining up of the audio and video out of the equation.
No worries though.
I take it I would have to treat them as separate recordings and then merge them from what I've read above.
Thanks guys.

Many video cameras will also take audio in, so in principle you could do it that way. The problem I've found is that in most cases the video cameras are expecting audio at mic-level which is far lower than line-level, which your digital pianos aux-out produces. Apparently you could build a cable with a regular trs connection on both ends but with a resistor in it and you could record video and audio at the same time directly. Never tried it but I remember being interested in this possibility back when I used to record myself.

I think a line to mike attenuator cable would be the best option. Here's one at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...5db_HDSLR_Audio_Line_Mic_Attenuator.html . This is an example ONLY to give you an idea. I've never used one and am not necessarily recommending this one. I suspect that you could find them cheaper. Regards, Dan.
