I could not think of anywhere else to put this so I thought this section was the most appropriate.
Basically I know a music examiner and she is a pianist. I asked her if she does any examining of other students with different instruments other than piano and she said yes. Surely I would have thought you would need a violinist to examin violin exams and brass instrumentalists to examin people talking brass exams. How on earth can someone who only plays the piano examin students of other instruments?. If for instance I was taking a Grade 4 violin exam I would want someone to examin me who was a violinist not a pianist

Generally, yes, but a lot depends upon what you're examining. If you're primarily interested in musicality, then it makes little difference; if your primarily interested in technique, then such a mix would be a lot weaker.

I played the harp in high school, and one year I performed at the solo & ensemble festival. Of course, they did not have any "harp" judges, so they gave me piano judges. One of the comments I got was, "use less pedal." Sigh.
(For those who do not understand- the pedals on a harp have NOTHING to do with the pedals on the piano - they change the sharps and flats!)

I did not even know that a harp had pedals

At the RCM exams in my city, the voice examiner didn't show up so the piano examiner was doing voice exams. Only up to grade 6 though .. the higher ones were rescheduled. But still, I would not have been happy as a voice student to get a piano examiner!

In California, we have what's called "combo evaluators" because there are not enough strings or winds (or voice!) students to give the evaluator a full day's work. Some branches decide to give the combo evaluators the lower level piano students to evaluate.
I've had to judge festivals with mixed instruments. Not fun. I have zero knowledge of wind instruments, so my comments for those poor kids were very general.
