Hello pianofriends! I promised you some weeks ago to report back about my testing for a new grand piano to my studio in Norway. Well, here is my report:

We have tested and recorded four grands; Yamaha S6, C.Bechstein B212, Bosendorfer 214 and Shigeru Kawai 212. We have also played on the Yamaha C7, Schimmel K213 and S&SB211 (but we found it unnecessary record these grands). We used a Zoom H4 and two Neumann KM 184 microphones in the recordings.

Our conclusions? The new C.Bechstein B212 stands in a class above the others! No doubt about that. It sounds very very warm and beautiful, the voicing is incredible and it has a power and length in the tones that none of the others can reach.

Big words? Yes, to say this may be big words, but I recommend you all to go and try for yourselves. I’ll think this grand must be the best grand in its class in the world. It is very very perfect for acoustic jazz- and classical recordings!

In two weeks this grand will come to our studio!

Regards from Tom in Norway

Hey Tom,

Sounds like you've been having a lot of fun! Any chance you can upload those recordings so we can all hear them? We love a 'guess the piano' thread around here.

And I must say I respectfully disagree with your opinion about the C. Bechstein. I made a similar evaluation and decided that the Bosie 214 was the best in its class overall. But that's what's great about the tier 1 pianos: each one will speak to each of us differently. I'm glad you found one that speaks to you in such a special way.

Oh, and please do post some pictures when the piano arrives! If we love anything more than a guess the piano thread, it's a delivery thread with photos!

Congratulations, and may the C. Bechstein continue to wow you over the years.

Hw about posting the recordings for all of us to enjoy... especially if they are unlabelled and we have to guess which is the Bechstein...

Tom,

The usual way is to post the pictures on a separate thread here. Instructions for doing this have been given numerous times so just do a search on "posting pictures". As for recordings, the usual thing is to get some free space at box.com, upload the MP3s there and post a link here. If anyone would like to add details on how to do either of these things please do.

Hi pianofriends!

If you go to these places you can download the grand piano recordings but remember; 1. The recordings are done on a Zoom H4 with the quality that it gives. 2. The trakcs are normalized so they all peak on 0.3dB.

Can you tell me which one you think are the best?

2. Shigeru Kawai 212
3. Yamaha S6
4. C. Bechstein B212

I am on a fast internet.

It is over 6 minutes to download the 30 mg bytes for just one wav.

This might be discouraging for those who would like to hear the recordings or participate.

Would it be possible for you to convert those WAV files to mp3 files?

They download in less than a minute each.

Thank you, LL

BTW, I fell in love with playing the Pathetique Adagio since High School.

I use AUDACITY (free from the internet) to do edits (from Zoom H4) and change from the large wav files to mp3's. Then save them to a file in my music folder. You could then upload them from there for us to view.

I hope this helps.

LL

Well I am not knowledgeable enough to know - but I find grand #3 the best - by far imho. Since I own a Bechstein upright I hope that this is the Bechstein...

Downloading all four was a painfully slow process. frown

To my dismay I discovered that recordings #1 and #2 are identical. frown

It spoiled my fun, the 30mb recording. Is there anyone willing to convert the recording to smaller file, so that it can make download faster?
