Hi all,
I just wanted to drop a note and tell you of my experience at the Hollywood Bowl last night. I went and saw Hélène Grimaud perform Brahmns piano concerto #1 and it was magical. As a student with less than a year of piano study under my belt it was so interesting and inspiring.
First of all, it was a beautiful performance. Hélène Grimaud is such a gifted artist. I was surprised how much she moved (physically), but as a former dancer it kind of made sense to me. I also sway a bit (especially after a glass of wine) and practice. Some may find this gratuitous or melodramatic, but it really gave me an indication of how she was literally feeling the music of the LA Philharmonic.
I loved watching her forearms, fingers , whole body really and how it was involved in the performance.
I loved her interaction with the conductor and the dynamic of the relationship. There were so many subtle (and not so subtle) looks exchanged. I never realized how important the conductor's role is and more importantly the significance of the pianist and composer communicating well.
Overall it was just an amazing experience and I would recommend any new piano students to get out there and expose yourself to as many live performances as possible!

Congrats on seeing a great performance. That video you had put up. I almost expected the piano to be smoking at the end. She really plays it.

Hello I saw Helene last night but her moving was criticised. I think she moved a bit too much. I have posted seperately about it. It was cool to meet her after the performance

Helene Grimaud is a pianist I want to hear in person some day. About the way she moves at the piano, in my opinion it is very much on the conservative side and isn't exhibitionistic or distracting.
