So about a month ago I created a post about a piano I needed.

link here: http://goo.gl/KN9W6G

In short I needed something that I could connect to my Mac with weighted keys.

I'm still looking for a keyboard and I stumbled upon this CASIO Privia PX 100 online for $300. Piano only, and no stand.

I know that the Privia series is good and I was wondering if this is a good deal?

P.S. I also found a Casio PX 330 for around 80 dollars more, should I pay up and get that instead or would the PX 100 be good enough?

That is a good price if it's in good shape. The PX-100 only has standard 5-pin MIDI I/O, not USB MIDI, so you will need an interface to get it to work with your Mac.

I would suggest that is expensive for a PX-100. That was the first (and lowliest) in the Privia line, and even though it was a good entry level piano at the time (2004???), there is now much better on the market for not much more money. Today's equivalent, the PX-150 can frequently be had new for $499 (with discount), and it is a significant improvement. The interim models: PX-110, 120, 130, and 135 can often be purchased in the $300 range - or less, and each step improved on the last in small but important ways.

I didn't see the bit about the 330 for $80 more. Yes, definitely, that is a MUCH better deal!

Do you think for $380ish the PX330 is worth it?

The 330 has just been upgraded to the 350 a very short while ago. I think $380ish is a terrific deal. They're selling well above that in stores.

Spend the extra $80 on the PX330, you won't regret it.

BTW

I own a PX330 myself and still like too much to upgrade to the newer PX350.

Definitely go with the PX-330. It's leaps and bounds over the PX-100.

I bought the used PX 330 today for around 400 in total with a stand included. I really like it so far. I think it's a great deal seeing how a brand new one is over 700 on Amazon!

Well done! The PX-330 is a fine board - and even better at that price!

Excellent choice! Great deal as well, less than half the price of new and you should have many years of enjoyment with your "new" PX330.

To demonstrate again how subjective this can all be, I have to disagree with vox, galaxy, etc. I preferred the sound and feel of the PX-500L (from the x00 line) and the PX-310 ( from the x10 line) to the PX-330. In some ways the newer x30 piano is more "authentic" but somehow was just less "musical" overall to my ears. And I didn't like the x30 action at all. Newer models aren't always unequivocally better.

Absolutely true. But leaving aside tonal preferences, the 330 at $380 is just plain better value than the 100 at $300. Features, polyphony, linear morphing, additional velocity layers, line outs - you name it, it's a much better deal all round.

"Leaving aside tonal preferences" -- there's also the key feel preference I mentioned. But I agree, on paper, looking at specs, the 330 kills the x00/x10 models. But we don't play specs. I have to tell you, I quite enjoyed playing my x00/x10 models, but I quickly returned the 330 I bought, which, to my ears and fingers was a big step backwards, regardless of the specs/features. The idea of putting aside the tone and feel reminds me of the old joke, "Well, apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"

Lol! Very apt!! But as you said, it's subjective. The one very objective thing in favor of the 330 vs the 100 is the age difference. I can't remember when they stopped producing the x00 series, but I bought my PX-310 in 2006. So I would assume the PX-100 in question is at least seven years old. Those older Casios were much more subject to clacky keys, and of course electronic and mechanical components can start to play up with the passage of time.

Actually there were some pricing issues but I got everything sorted out. After sorting everything out, I got the PX330 used with a stand for $370 after tax. Which is an even better value! The piano itself has a few scuffs on it here and there but everything seems to work just fine.
