I've once again accessed my silly side. I like this piece but have one question. I do a simple recap starting at 1:34 and part of me views this as taking the lazy route. The other half views it as recapping familiar music to finish the piece off. Your thoughts?? https://soundcloud.com/pantonality/serious-silliness

Hi, Steve -- as usual, an interesting, logical work. Personally, given the length of the piece -- a small, short composition -- a note-for-note recap seems perfectly appropriate to me. In the SoundCloud performance, I'd be inclined to emphasize more strongly the introduction of the "B" section at 0:34, and create a different sort of pianistic texture that than that of "A" -- but I think the ABA form is totally satisfying as is.
Incidentally, I did VERY well in the Boston Amateur Competition, being one of the six chosen for the Final round. The Boston judges are especially appreciative of my adventurous programming, and this time I chose to introduce pieces all written from 1992 - 2011 by various contemporary composers. If you're interested in haven a listen, I authorized them to post all three rounds on YouTube.

Your comments caused me to think about the structure and I agree there's a significant shift at :34, but it's to a development type of section that uses bits of the exposition in different ways, kind of a mix, match and shuffle. Thus the need for a recap. I've listened to each performance of yours at the Boston Amateur Competition. It's always interesting to actually see fellow PW posters in action. I think I enjoyed your semi-final performance the most. Your playing is really good and I think you should find the thread for the Boston Amateur Competition and bump it with a link to one of your videos there.

Who do you compose this for? Do you have a target audience in mind? People who spend lots of time thinking about music are more likely to want to hear "new" things and crave for variations and surprises even when the overall form calls for a recap of a previous idea. More casual listeners would find the familiarity provided by a more literal recap "reassuring" and easier to follow.

I appreciate your question because it's a good one. Actually, I compose for me. For larger pieces I would put more effort into making every section of a piece unique. This little piece crams a lot of variations and surprises into less than 2 minutes. If I was to revamp the ending I'd simply add a little extra to the recap. Yet I can't bring myself to make that effort because the ending is already one of the harder spots of the piece and for me adding anything usually means making it harder to play. However, this is a pretty savvy group and I thought I'd ask for opinions here (and elsewhere). So far the consensus seems to be to leave it as is.
