Totally agree with carey on Oscar Levant playing the Gershwin Concerto in F ... he has to be the most versatile
pianist I've ever come across (better than Liszt?).
By chance I had the DVD of The American in Paris on my
turntable ... the playing of the Concerto shows up Gershwin exploiting the grand piano percussive quality to it's limit ... and they say that Mozart was once guilty of "too many notes" ... Lavant is quite breathless in
clattering away up and down the keyboard.
But more impressive (for me) in the American in Paris
finale,is the energetic dancing of Gene Kelly (to his own choreography) capturing in dancing with Leslie Caron, the
soulful music of Gershwin.

The movie Carnegie Hall, which has a very thin plot, but is full of musicians from the 1940s, including Arthur Rubinstein, playing de Falla's "Ritual Fire Dance": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj6_5qWZCDYIt's been awhile since I've seen it, but the most striking thing I remember when I first saw it, was the all-male orchestra scenes - no female players anywhere! Janusz Olejniczak I've never heard of this guy, but his playing in that clip was top notch. He was the actual pianist in The Pianist, and performs regularly at the Chopin festivals at Nohant. (I wonder if he does it in costume.)
