Half a dozen iron wound strings have appeared in the post but he failed to include putting the coils in the pin end. There was a thread about a tool for this last week. Could I have some suggestions? I'm going to have a go installing at least one or two tomorrow morning.

Search for 'piano restringing' videos on youtube.
You don't need a special tool, though it's hard on the thumb if you don't have one. The only essential is a t-bar or crank tuning lever to turn the pin while it's held in either your other hand or in the coil winder tool.

I've done it. Because it's soft iron it's easier to work with. For those who are interested - now that's the sound Mr Wornum wanted.

Yeh, but he's kind of a mate and had the original with coil to copy. Still, I seemed to have managed.

So does it sound good? How's the transition between the plain, iron wound and copper wound strings?

The copper bass strings are slightly richer (even though they're 170 years old) but the big difference is the flat tubby sound s gone on the 3 bi-chords I've replaced. The higher pitches should be quite the revelation.
