Hi all! I'm Francis Smith (introduced myself in the Pianist Corner section), have played piano for over 29 years, and now live in Calgary, Alberta, since 2012 (I grew up in Fort Wayne, IN, from 1979-2004, then studied in London, UK, 2004-2007, then San Francisco 2007-2012).

Since I have moved so much, I had to leave my 1914 Hobart M. Cable upright grand behind in Indiana.

Once I settled into my flat here in downtown Calgary, I found a 1962 Heintzman conservatory model upright that had been in the Calgary school system. Despite its school history, it was still in great shape. I bought it.

I had been dreaming of having a GREEN piano (to go with my green violin I got when I lived in London). I was introduced to a professional piano restorer/refinisher, and he did a wonderful job of "greening" my piano. Since it was built of walnut (a wood too dark to stain in any colour), he veneered it in bird's-eye maple, a much lighter wood amenable to colour staining. He found a shade of translucent green stain closely matching that of my green violin (he used that as inspiration), which really makes the woodgrain show beautifully. He also had an airbrush artist friend of his paint an image of my green violin on the music desk panel. After 9 months of work, the piano was finally delivered to my downtown Calgary flat this past Saturday morning.

Ever seen a green piano? Enjoy!

I think it looks stunning. Because it's such a unique piece, it will be worth having the internals restored as well, when the time comes. It's actually breathtaking!

Hi Francis - Welcome to Piano World!

You piano is really quite spectacular and very beautiful. The use of the bird's-eye maple was a great choice and the resulting depth and texture is stunning. Obviously, it ain't green paint!-LOL.

Please send complements to the artist who created the violin on the music desk. It adds the perfect touch.

Enjoy!

Hmmmm... very interesting I've seen that color on electric guitars!
I'm wondering about other guitar shades that might lend themselves
to piano finishes, sunburst yellow or red... smile

Gibson is offering guitar type finishes on some of it's Baldwin models. Oddly enough, while I don't like sunbursts on guitars, a nice tobacco or 3 color sunburst might look cool on an upright. Smith Alien, It's not something I would do but I love your originality and the break from the stodginess of piano finishes.

I can see your reflection in the first pic. Is it a marbleized finish???
