For those of you who are fans of the TV show here in the United States called "American Restoration", did any of you see the episode where they were restoring something for Billy Joel? Prior to the restoration, Rick took him around the "bone yard". One of the things he showed him was an old square grand piano. Billy Joel aka "Piano Man" played on it and said, "Oh, yes, this is called a spinet." Then a little graphic came up on the screen defining what a spinet piano is. I'm not one who really yells at the TV, but in this case I did. I also always cringe when they do a panorama shot of the "bone yard" (which is outside) and there is that old upright piano there. I know it's pretty dry in Las Vegas, but at some point, I believe that piano will be beyond restoration! I know I really need to get a life. laugh

It wouldn't be the first time an excellent pianist was in the dark about their instrument from a technical standpoint. He's probably never had to play on a spinet piano in his life.

Anything made of wood that is left outside for at least one summer here in Las Vegas will be toast. Any more than that it disintegrates rapidly. The summer heat alone will turn all glues into brittle sap. I occasionally get a call from someone that says the piano been in the garage or a storage locker for a year or more and I say no thanks. I've been waiting to see that episode with the Piano Man but obviously missed it. No tuner that I know of was contacted in this town as a trade expert for any advice. A long time ago I was contacted by the producers of the Pawn Stars show to refinish a square grand for the show but they wanted it done for free in exchange for the 20 seconds of exposure. More time and money than I care to spend.

Ryan, Turn off the TV. Back away from it slowly. Sit down in a chair and pick up a good Superman comic book if you have one. You'll get much more useful information from the comic book.

It really is amazing how the TV producers just think your time is totally free. Someone from American Pickers contacted me last year wanting to come film for 3 days for free. That is what our trade needs, more exposure to the general public showing how worthless pianos are, then sneaking around the corner laughing about how they stuck it to you. Yeah right, meanwhile they live in million dollar homes.

You can see that upright piano every time American Restoration goes through the beginning credits in season 1. I bet that thing is a haven for Scorpions being left out but you would be shocked at how many people just leave pianos outdoors on an open deck in the rain or weather thinking it will be just fine.

Not interested in listening to anyone who scapegoats a piano tech via national media.

All tongue in cheek aside, Billy Joel got his start from the piano bars in NYC at age 16 and I'm sure he has played a spinet or two in his life. For a history on Billy Joel go here:

I did see that episode of American Restoration. It is disrespectful to have a piano outside, exposed to the elements. The square grand obviously was not valued at all, but even then, Billy Joel shouldn't have called it a "spinet". Having said all that, He did make it sound as good as it could have possibly sounded
