You don't sell a string cover for 12 months and then all of a sudden you sell 6 in one month without trying

You don't have any appointments in a certain area for three years and then you have five in a week, only to revert back to never going there again

You don't see a single Yamaha piano for three months and then you have three a week for the next two months. Happens with Steinways too

You start driving to your second appointment of the day only to realize its one block away from the first one blush

You have four different people with the same last name in two days

I know there are more...

We have a highly evolved ability to recognize patterns. They may appear to be non random at a small scale, but over a very large sample of your work, it would be essentially random. We only notice patterns, not randomness.

There have been several times that I've tuned two of the same brand and style of pianos in the same day...

Yes, but, does the bar down the street have the same pianos on your Thursday schedule?

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

What I've learned from being in the tuning/servicing business for awhile is this. Always be prepared to take advantage of the slightest opportunity!

I've noticed a pattern in my own tunings - They're not that good.

I do notice there are certain geographical areas I tune in regularly even though the clients don't seem to know each other. Other areas I never seem to go to.

My theory is this: An in-tune piano creates a quantum nexus that reverberates through the collective unconscious in the geographical area where a piano has been tuned. This wave moves through the collective unconscious outward from the piano, in a logarithmic pattern, augmented and transduced by the Delta waves produced by the player's brain. Other pianos within a 2-3 mile radius respond to this quantum stimulation and collect it, much like a Dish Network collector. The brains of these pianos' owners are drawn towards the piano on a sub-conscious level.

I've been working on my "Neural Delta Nexus Temperament III" which, when perfected, will usher in a new epoch of human enlightenment across the planet. Be prepared, it will happen spontaneously, like "the Rapture" described in Thessalonians.

Hmmm. whome There may be room for fringe science in piano technology after all. With a bit of conspiracy woven into this, it might even make a good episode on "Fringe."

Ryan,
There must be some sort of practical application to this. Can you rig up a quantum nexus detector and drive around town with it? Maybe you can calibrate it to sense where there is a critical mass of pianos needing tuning - that is, not just neglected pianos, but pianos that are regularly used and out of tune? Then you could concentrate your advertising in that area. Or, you could just reverse the polarity on your device to prompt the piano owners to give you a call.

Ryan,

Does your "Neural Delta Nexus Temperament III" include random unisons to perfectly align with Chaos theory?

And if so, do you find the alignment is best in a square grand, player piano with cracked plate, or a Whitney spinet?

Have you ever called a customer to let them know that it has been some time since your last visit, and would they like to schedule a tuning appointment? More times then I can possibly count, they say "I was just thinking about calling you! Thank you so much for calling."

One time I showed up at the address where I had been tuning a Steinway D the last few years. A lady answered the door and I didn't recognize her but said I was there to tune the Steinway again. She said we do have a Steinway but I think you need the house two doors down, we traded homes with Mr. Edwards, your client. He lives where we did. We have a Steinway B, let's schedule a tuning for next week. That was weird, but I had two good clients right next door to each other after that.

I have heard them say that too but I assumed they were just trying to be nice, which is okay by me.
