My own embarrassing moment came in 2001. I had a tuning appointment 10:00 AM. I show up on time and the house keeper leads me right to the piano. I am half way through the temperment, and it dawns on me that I am in the wrong home, wrong address, tuning the wrong piano!

Excllent ! at last the owner did not fall asleep.

Most embarrassing moment was after receiving compliments from Helene Grimaud "Oh but you are a good tuner, it is rare!"
The grand broke 2 uni chords during the radio program where she was invited. I changed the first one by taking one on an older D that was in a neighboring studio, then bang, another one broke 5 minutes later.

Was not my fault in the end, just a new tuner that tuned the low bass SOOO much lower than any of us, that have fragilised the wire after a few weeks (all bass wire had to be changed, but the piano was about 25 years old anyway).

No way to feel good about the compliment, then !!!

I wish to add some kind and sensitive phrase but nothing comes to mind.!

I've knocked on the wrong door - the last time being just two months ago when a couple of German Shepheard dogs escorted me out of the yard. I've knocked on the right door, but have been pointed to the wrong piano, and tuned it. That often happens once a year, usually at hotels and schools.

Most embarrassing would be pulling a spinet action and putting a hole in a lamp shade with the action bracket as I lifted it out.

Not to me, but to my tuner. He stood up and his pants went down. He was embarrassed and I was embarrassed for him. He looked at me and mumbled: "Good thing you're not the lady of the house."

We both had a good laugh and I still kid him about it.

Once got up from a piano and stepped on the owners cat who decided to fall asleep beside the bench. Like stepping on a police siren made out of jello.

I rarely break strings while tuning, but I broke two on a 70's era spinet once. The lady of the house had decided to do topless sunbathing out on her back pateo with just the clear pateo door and a few feet between her and the piano. The strings were replaced "free of charge" because for some strange reason, I had the hammer on the wrong pins(twice).

Tell! Tell!

I have nothing interesting to add to this thread, sadly...

I always hate it when I go to a customer's home to tune their piano (and I am just getting over a cold.) And once I get there, I start coughing up a lung!

Jbyron,
Nowadays I view the customer's piano keyboard as dirtier than a toilet seat. I assume that the keys have bacteria and germs on them. Wash hands after tuning!

Never fall for the crooked picture on the wall trick. The one with the loose wire which is just above the priceless Hung Ka Pow Dynasty Vase full of red wine sitting above that 100K dollar Alpaca rug
