The number of turns on the pin to get old string off?
If I restring all do I need to replace pin bushings or just new pins?

I'm new to this forum so take it easy on me.
I picked this J up for a possible rebuilding project.
Retired and have the time and space.

I think you should start with an easier piano to work on. Steinway uprights have a number of peculiarities that require some experience before one is ready to tackle them. They will be beyond what Reblitz covers. You can pick up any number of more conventional uprights for free, that will give you the experience you need before you work on this piano.

If the coils and pins are original and untouched....

1/2 turn should let you lift the becket. Then, pull the coil off, cut the wire, etc. Going back in, use a dummy pin to put 2 complete turns in a coil, replace on pin, tighten. It will take a little more than the 1/2 turn out you started with, but that just sinks the pin in a little more and gets some unused pin block involved in the tuning, (a good thing).

Restringing is easier if the bearing bars are off, but you will have to keep the tension low, low, low, if you ever hope to screw them back down again against the string tension. Do NOT take them off with the old strings under them at tension, they can break.

It is usually not a job done well, the first time.

A J may have a capo bar. I am not certain.

There probably aren't any pin bushings, either.
