Just a quick question for the techs on here.

I've just got my set of new bass strings for my upright. It'll be a week or two before I get round to fitting them - will they be OK left coiled up in the delivery box or would it be better if I took them out and stored them straightened out?

You can leave them coiled.

During production of the bass string the core is stretched; after coming out of the machine it becomes about 8mm shorter, so the copper is somewhat pressed together.

Hang from the coil that collects all of the hitch pins on a nail in the wall. Easier to install when they are not all twisted up.

Depending upon who you purchased the strings from will determine how many turns required previous to tension applied.

I just had this conversation with Danny at GC Piano yesterday. He is a highly recommended bass string maker. I had to put off a restringing job to August and I asked him if it would be better to take the coil out of the box but he said just to leave them stored in the shipping box as it won't affect the condition of the core or copper winding. My two cents.

Thanks - I'll probably leave them in the box 'till a few days before I fit them, as they're easier to store that way. A few days of hanging should get any kinks out of them, presumably.

The maker has told me they don't need to be twisted when fitting.

I can understand your concern, since a set of bass strings are so expensive these days. (you'd think they were wound with gold!) But it doesn't matter one way or the other if you leave them coiled in the box or set them free.
