Here's Valentina Lisitsa stuck at a train station playing on a street piano. Say what you want about refinement of her interpretation (which is perhaps irrelevant in these circumstances); I think this video demonstrates her attitude towards her fans, which makes them love her.

I spent a while looking for the full version of La Campanella played on a street piano since it seems like the official cameraman stopped filming in the middle of La Campanella for whatever reason:



Amazing that she got most of the fast repeats to play!

Why does she roll everything in the nocturne? Actually, why does ANY pianist do this? It sounds like crud! Other than that, props to her for playing so well on quite possibly a horrendous action.

Do you guys think it was totally impromptu, as implied, or at least partially planned in advance? I ask because in some of the spectator videos, you can see that the official video was filmed with a professional camera and someone ran some wires.

Now, I guess it's also reasonable that since she was traveling for promotion anyway, the camera guy was already with her, but maybe not.

Just wondering. I love Valentina either way!

There was a long thread about her appearance at St Pancras in the Piano Forum a few months ago, and there are several Youtubes by several people floating around.

Apparently, the gist of it was that Lisitsa tweeted beforehand that she was going to be there at that time, and many fans turned up to see her play on that clapped-out Grotrian, which I've been told is a permanent fixture at the station (- it's bolted down, including the bench, to stop it from being carted off....).

When I played on it a few weeks later, I discovered that its una corda (actually, 'practice pedal' on that upright) was clamped down, so its volume was very limited, presumably to avoid the tannoy announcements about train departures being drowned out by heavy-handed pianists grin.

The late, great Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli does this routinely (LH before RH) - especially in the Ravel G major concerto's slow movement - to heighten expressiveness in slow cantabile music.

I like it here and there, placed intelligently, but when it's thrown in all over the place to try and sound more emotional it is just awful. It's a musical tool, which can be overused. (and in this case with Val, it is)

I do like her little improvs though. Liszt used to do the same thing around Chopin, to which he replied "Play it right or don't play it at all!". haha

Actually I was also curious about those variants and found out that those are original variants for Nocturne Op.9 no.2 written by Chopin himself. They are found in the Weiner Urtext edition (Jan Ekier) or the Polish National edition.

You can google "Chopin nocturne authentic variants"

Rumor has it Chopin wrote them because too many unskilled pianists were playing the nocturne badly in parlors and he wanted to make it more difficult...

BTW, Lisitsa has been playing the Mikuli variants for some years now, as in many of her Youtube videos and at her Royal Albert Hall concert last year. She added nothing that isn't in the score.

How does one obtain a copy of these variants? The pictures on the blog show a third staff line for the extra stuff.

But this does not look any different from the version I have.

I think these are from the Ekier edition.
