Not me, (though fifths do sometimes put me in a zen-like trance) but two clients have fallen asleep on the couch near the piano during tuning! I was very surprised - usually clients come up with last-minute errands to run, or suddenly feel the urge to go do some yardwork.

Has anyone ever encountered this? It was a producer the first time, and the performing artist the second. They said it was soothing. (hey, maybe I can market that)

I find the repetition hypnotic. It's not exactly soothing, but I've had clients fall asleep in their easy chairs as I pound out the tuning. I haven't quite fallen off, but I've sure wanted too...:-)

It happens. A good heavy power chord with lots of bass brings 'em right out of it!

I once tuned for the son of a famous Russian composer. His mother (the composer's wife) appeared after I finished tuning. She told me her nap while I was tuning was the best she had ever had!

I've found it not unusual at all. I had one older man that I had to wake up! I have dogs fall asleep quite often. You'd really think it would irritate them but, again, it seems either soothing or so mundane that they fall asleep. I sometimes joke with people that sit down in a chair near me that I've been known to put people to sleep.

Hey, on the flip side I had a family keep their kids home from school and ate popcorn while they watched me! They were very nice and I had a good time.

When I started nodding off during tunings, I knew it was time to retire. And I did.

Long time temperament of tuning can kill an elephant knee down. I myself sometimes fall into a slumber which is bordered by Nirvana in a tuning. The plucking good option for sleep babies sick, elderly and even pregnant cats

It's not uncommon to put customers to sleep with the tuning of the piano. I always hate trying to wake up a 90 year old customer who has lapsed into an apparent coma due to my tuning the piano, but heck, I need to get paid!

My pet theory on it is that having the pitch settle over and over has a soothing effect.

I have one "older" customer who has twice gone in to take a nap while I was tuning. On waking her to let her know I was finished (and to give her the bill) she has stared blankly at me and asked, "Who are you?" I explain and she remembers but I do wonder for how much longer.
