I guess this the recital season and my boys had their very first recital.

A year ago, my older son came home asked if he could have piano lessons, I said OK and went to basement dug out the 10 old Yamaha keyboard thinking that should work for a while and registered him for the group activities at the community centre next to us.

Then I came to lurk on this forum....

There were frustrations of course.

There was a day that I asked him to play Old McDonald just two times without mistake and call it a day, and he cried and cried said he would never able to do that.

There was a day he played so awful, I had to went downstairs and close the door.

There was a day he didn't want to practice at all and I told him I would sell the piano.

But it brought so much fun to the family.

There were days he begged "can I play it just one more time before I go to bed?" (and I had to say no).

There were days the two boys fought for the piano to play first, and made a deal to play alternately and laughed together after every song.

There were days, many days, listening to his practice was the best moment of my day after a full day of work.

There were days, many days, we got around the piano, songs after songs, and hugs after hugs.

I learned so much here on what to do, how to help practice, what to ask the teacher and learned to appreciate her effort.

And more importantly, I learned what not to do, not to correct every mistakes, not to mumbo jumbo, and not to interfere with the teacher.

OK, I guess I said too much, here is the link.

I have nothing to brag about the playing level, and it is not the point. In average, the older one is playing 15 minutes a day, and the younger one, probably less than 5, and their playing level probably reflects that accurately.

What I have to brag is that the music learning experience has been so fun and satisfying, the younger one listens and sings when the older on practices, the older one is proud to help the younger one, they both looking forward to the lessons every week and enjoys every song they learned. (A favorite game to close eyes, and flip to a page and play that song).

The most satisfying things, of course, is the music that fills the room, for the first time, we had live Christmas music in our house, and that music, is still in my ear after 6 months.

Barb, thanks for the kind words!

AZN, the group stuff was only the first 3 months. They are now taking private lessons (at a strip mall music school, which has 600+ students )
