Hi all. After some more searching, I found a late 1990s Yamaha Disklavier that uses floppies. It is in a U1 body (acoustic) and in mint condition with hammer in like new. Plays medium (not too mellow, not too bright). I would *like* to be able to connect my iPhone (or iPad) to the disklaiver system and call up hundreeds of pieces and play pieces that way, instead of manually inserting floppies. Any idea if this is possible with the older style disklaciver? Or is it as simple as connecting an IN wire? (Sounds naive, but humor me.) Anyone?

The group over in the Digital Forum is great with all of that adapter stuff.

Around here, plugging in a Dampp Chaser System can be confusing.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

If your iPhone/iPad is equipped with the original 30-pin dock connector, you could plug in a Yamaha i-MX1 iPhone/iPad MIDI interface and connect the Apple device to the Disklavier's MIDI IN and OUT ports. Then use a MIDI player app that supports "Core MIDI" to play MIDI files via the i-MX1. As of this writing, it looks like Yamaha hasn't yet released an updated version of the i-MX1 that supports Apple's new "Lightning" dock connector introduced on the iPhone 5.

Apple's devices also support Network MIDI, transmitting over a Wi-Fi link. It doesn't seem like there are any good off-the-shelf network MIDI adapters to use on the piano side, though. It seems like most people are using computers for that.

It might be easier and cheaper to just dedicate a laptop computer to the piano, connected using a USB<->MIDI adapter. Apple makes it awkward to get MIDI files in and out of iOS devices since you can't normally just copy files to them like a flash drive.
