Who are we, piano-wise?

Take the 2013 ABF Survey and we'll find out!

For continuity purposes I carried over most of Sam S.'s last year's questions, but if I've missed anything (or if there's something you're dying to know about the group) I can easily add another question.

PLEASE let me know ASAP if you have difficulty accessing the survey. Google has thoughtfully made some recent "updates" to their system; I have had trouble sharing surveys with non-Google account holders. If access is a problem, I can move the survey to another data-collection provider.

For comparison purposes, here's the 2012 Survey responses.

Have fun!
Jean

Seems to work fine Jeanie - except the question:
"If you do perform for other people, where?"

should be a "check all that apply"

I didn't submit yet - if you can fix that question I will take it again and submit.

Thanks a bunch!
Sam

Thanks for doing this, Jeannie.

A couple of questions I left blank because I wasn't sure how to answer.

I didn’t answer the question about improvising from a fake book because yes/no didn’t really apply - I’m sort of in the middle. I can if it’s something very simple; for example, I have some easy lead sheets for Christmas carols & I can play some of those without much problem. Anything more difficult & I can’t get past a few bars. But I’m working on it.

And I didn’t answer the one about experience on other instruments because I’ve tried to teach myself guitar and recorder for decades, but without any kind of lessons or much focus. Calling it “experience” seems overstating; on the other hand, I started piano having some familiarity with the basics of theory, and I could read a treble clef.

I'm in, too smile

I had to smile about the answering possibilities of the question “On average, how many days per week do you practice?” – who will select the first possibility “0” days???
I think the guy who marks this with a cross should be propose for the award “eternal beginner” grin

Please do not be angry, I just have to smile.
Thanks for the work!

yester: I'm not sure either who would answer "0," but if we're honest here and we're averaging... smile (I don't get upset about this kind of stuff - no worries!)

Carol, I'm right there with you on the "kinda - sorta" bit on the playing from a fake book, as I'm just learning how to do it myself. ("E7, wait, that's a ... uh ... wait ... G#, B, D, and an E? No . . . an F. Wait, it IS an E!" My fake book stuff takes a looong time to sort through. laugh ) I think I'll go back to the survey and add another choice to that question.

Thanks for the input, guys!

Thanks for the survey JeanieA (and Sam S for last year).

If you are still making changes, the play by ear question can also benefit from an option for:

[ ] I can play by ear, if it's REALLY simple

Thanks again.

Sand Tiger, thanks for the suggestion. I've added that option to the play by ear question.

We have over 30 responses now, here's how it's shaping up if you're curious.

There are a couple of vague and ambiguous questions in there - for example, what do "Advanced Beginner" and "Intermediate" mean, and how do you tell which one you are? What about "Advanced" and "Expert"?

And who prefers an electronic "piano" to an acoustic one? wink

There's a lot of Chopin-lovers here - more than a third of the favorite composer responses were Chopin. smile

The runner-up is Beethoven, but he has only half what Chopin has. Together they make up half the total responses.

Just like the previous surveys, we are not really the Adult Beginners Forum, but the Adult Beginners and Restarters Forum - split about 50/50. I bet that will probably continue to be the case as more people take the survey.

It's a self-assessment of your playing ability. How well do you think you play? So it means what you think it means. Interesting that no one last year claimed to be an expert.

I don't get 0 hours a week either actuall - even with averaging.
The only way you can have an average of 0 is if you never play.
And if you never play....well, seems odd someone who never plays would participate.

It will be interesting to see how many people take the survey this year and to see how the stats change.

Dumb question. How can I access the results without going through the survey again? Interested seeing how it shapes up.

I expect it's way too late for suggestions. Will anyways....

Do you improv?

Is there a gender you think is best for training? (I expect classical to dominate this)
Is there a gender you think is best for just plain fun? (not just prefer)

Is learning piano harder than you expected?

Are you just wanting to learn to play? Or are you learning theory and the whole understanding of music? (not just sight reading)

Are you studying/training anything else in music at the same time? Other instrument or singing.

JeanieA already posted the link to results. I'll relink it here, because if one person is asking a dozen more are scratching their heads: survey results

Some good additional questions. However, they don't want it too long. The survey would go on for pages if every single suggested question was added. A long survey might discourage the casual person from taking the survey and/or have them push submit half way through.

Thanks, Sand Tiger! That link to the results does get buried as the thread gets longer.

No bias intended, but the one result that always surprises me is the male/female ratio. Other than my teacher, none of the men of my aquaintance play piano. Guitar, drums, yes, but no keyboards. Either they're "closet" pianists, or I hang out with the wrong people!

Maybe whoever does it next year might refer to this and incorporate some addition. Or maybe a change in how certain questions are worded. I know we could go on and on with questions.

I truly do appreciate JeanieA doing this. Thank you...

I would like to clarify performing for others. Do they have to be human? Next question specifies people. Not trying to be cute. Animals respond to music. Very honest critics. I won't explain here.

I’m astonished that Bach is so little mentioned until now. And so far no one has mentioned Schumann. It’s usual that a lot of beginners play Bach and Schumann pieces in their lessons, right? I would have thought that these composers get more votes.

I didn't answer for any. I have many I really like and admire. Can't pick one.

Just for discussions sake. One that isn't mentioned. John Williams. The guy does what I hope to get to do a hint of. He only works with a keyboard, paper, and pencil. No technology. Don't need it.

I was surprised that question listed out Advanced Beginner, but not Advanced Intermediate. The Intermediate to Advanced gulf seems pretty big and I wasn't completely comfortable having to place myself in either category.
