Hello all, i am looking to get an upright for my wife and son. We narrowed it down to a k5 for $6800(is this a good deal?) and a 1990 reconditioned u3 for $5500(maybe i can get it for $5000).

Is it worth to get the k5 over the u3, and if yes is $6800 a good deal.

Thank you all,

db

k5 sounds like a good deal, if the family likes it, that would be my choice.

Hello Danny,

FYI: The Kawai K5 (48.5") is more inline with the Yamaha U1 (48"). Kawai's K6 (52") would compare to Yamaha's U3 (52"). Just as Kawai's K3 (48") would compare with Yamaha's new b3 (48").

Hope this helps!

Good luck,

K5 is a good deal if it includes tax/delivery. I bought a U1 not too long ago. I love it so I'm biased. I almost did go for the K5.

Jeff,

I would love to get the k6, or even a new u3 but that would be a strech. Though i love how the u3 sounds. We tried couple of new u1's and we found them lacking specially the key action compared to a u3 or a k5.

Thank you,

Danny

New K5 over a 23 year old U3 but that's me. I'm not a huge fan of the U sound. the K's are well built, highly regarded and should hold resale value well. If it were that I liked the U sound, really wanted the bigger sound of a couple of extra inches and a tech verified a low amount of wear and tear on the 23 year old piano, you shouldn't be worried about buying the U. Just remember that a lot of the grey market U's come from institutional settings and have a lot of hours of use on them. Therefore the need for a careful appraisal from a tech who is not paid by the shop selling the Yamaha.

I would go for the u3 if it checks out as a good instrument. The extra height will provide a far superior bass and over all sound. If the piano has been taken care of the age would not concern me. A reliable tech can answer the questions on the quality of the instrument. I am not privy to Kawai pricing but I think a new yamaha b3 could be purchased for that amount.
