Hello Everyone

Me here after a week long busy time with school. I was talking to one of my friends the other day who is a piano teacher and when I asked about her method book, she said that she uses the Bastien method. She liked it very much...and disliked the adult piano adventures series.

If you go to any music store on the planet, there are probably 50 or more method books for teaching piano of which Bastien is one. It would be interesting what your opinion and the opinion of the teacher you mentioned in your post - what their opinion is of Bastien.

There is no mention that Bastien was in any way related to teaching adults specifically.

Why is this unidentified teacher - who doesn't like the adult piano adventures series -does not mention the reasons why the teacher dislikes the adult piano adventures series and why doesn't the unidentified teacher not list their reasons why anyone would consider using the Bastien method to teach anyone piano - in the context - that in the year of being on this forum Bastien has been mentioned maybe 4 times whereas the adult adventures series is mention all the time in a positive way.

It is then - that others would be able to respond to your questions.

It's what I first learned from after learning on my ear by ear and through youtube tutorials not knowing how to read.

My #1 recommendation? If you haven't already, seek out an experienced teacher to help you in such decisions and in building a solid foundation (how can we teach ourselves to do this when we don't know what it consists of). I elaborate further here: Click Here

...my thoughts if you absolutely can't afford the tutelage of a teacher? Method books are largely all similar and you honestly won't know which would work best for you personally unless you went through them all (but obviously this would be silly and isn't recommended). It's best to just settle on one of the them and establish a routine of slowly working through the material for a little while each and every day. To prove that they're all similar and yet how everyone has a different opinion of each, see these two links:

Link 1
Link 2

and a funny, but accurate quote I just saw finding the links above which I thought I'd had bookmarked: "Comparing method books is like comparing chickens - why bother."

The Piano Adventures Regular or Accelerated series are generally held to be better than their Adult series.

Bastien will give you a lot of I-IV-V chord bashing. Piano Adventures is more creative than that.

Agreed. I learned as a child with Bastien books and I still have them. I have since been using the Faber adventures books because they are more creative and teach more hand independence in my opinion.
