Rana is Rana, but if there's a comparison to be made I'd say she reminds me more of De Larocca than Kissin.

I like the images of Rana's hands during the Chopin, she has an admirable technique and her hands are pretty. However I am not taken by her interpretation.

Rana is Rana, but if there's a comparison to be made I'd say she reminds me more of De Larocca than Kissin. Interesting, I think she's much more like Kissin or Argerich than de Larrocha. Rana is playing her chosen repertoire excellently, but I can't really imagine her pulling off Scarlatti, Mozart, Schubert, or even some Beethoven as convincingly. Though of course I would be happy to be proven wrong!

Not a fan of this Raindrop, but I think she's doing a great job with the preludes so far! Interested to see how Dong's will hold up in comparison...

The characters and colors she's able to create are incredible IMO, but I find many of her tempi to be too impetuous for my taste. I felt this throughout the Scriabin, as well as several of the preludes (esp. nos. 3, 10, 11, 16). Is it just me?
EDIT: And she had only gotten to 17 at that point... I thought the same of 18 and 19.

I don't think it works that way, or at least I hope it doesn't -- i.e. comparing players head-to-head because they're playing the same pieces. I would hope that each gets considered on her own terms.I admit that in this discussion, I've talked about some of the performances that way too, especially on the Liszt Sonata, but that was because I was replying to posts where this was already being done. I don't think I'll be evaluating Dong on how it compares with Rana -- especially considering that Dong seems to be a quite unusual musician (as competitions go!), and therefore that the only fair way to evaluate her (IMO) is on her own terms. P.S. (unrelated) Anyway else feel that Rana's two closing chords of Prelude #18 foreshadowed #20 (C minor)? Maybe this is an accepted and well-known thing about that ending to #18, but I've never heard it, and never noticed or thought of it before. All I know is that when she hit those chords (and the way she hit them), I immediately thought of #20, and never had before.

Oh I know, but it's interesting to see how people approach the same works differently. Isn't that sort of what the required piece is about? Seeing who "got the right idea" the best. But the Preludes, yes, leave a lot of room for artists to be individual.
Funny that I find a lot of her tempi to be very natural...but that's because my benchmark recording of the preludes is performed by Argerich.

On another note, I think Rana's preludes are wonderful! She really had a great legato sound on the E-flat major prelude.

I think Rana's rubato is very controlled and restrained. Maybe that's how Chopin played the piano, but I would prefer a little more freedom and flexibility between languor and vigor.

Only heard the last 8-9 preludes or so by Rana, but thought all of that was top playing! She's absolutely up there in the front. Not sure about some of the remaining predictions of Brendan,but let's see.
