Hello all smile

I've got a non sounding key, due to trying to glue a snapped ribbon (that pulls the hammer back into position after striking the strings) and have managed to glue the ribbon to the hammer. It's really fiddly to get to, so was thinking it would be easier to sort out, if I took the front action (don't know if that what it is) off, but I'm scared incase something goes wrong. So was wondering if anyone can give me instructions on what's best to do. I will go and take some pics, and be back in a bit frown

So I'm thinking, would I just turn the wooden knob things at either end (see pic 2) and then unscrew the brass rod at center top (see pic 3) Then it will just lift off?

Any help would be much appreciated smile

Wayne, I would post a link to this thread in the technicians' forum, you should get some expert and safe advice there.

You got it wayne, turn the ones at either end through 90 degrees, then unscrew the centre.

Pull it towards you at the top a little to clear the threads on that screw and then lift up and out.

Warning: have somewhere to put it down where it will not get knocked by either you, your partner or the dogs, also, somewhere that there isnt dog hair as this is a nuisance inside the piano.

It will have two little "locating feet" at either end (underneath) so when putting back ( reverse of removal) you have to locate these two feet in place first before screwing the screw down.

Watch that you get the soft pedal and damper pedal ends in place at the same time.

Wayne, I have taken thousands out to clean etc, once you have done it you will laugh at just how easy it is, promise.

Ok, yeah that wasn't too bad, although for some reason I thought it would be in two parts, but it's one sealed unit. So gaining access to where the ribbons are is still as niggly.

I'm stuck!

yeh righty o , thats about as helpfull as a chocolate firegaurd then.

Okay, wayne on the Offending key, if you lift up the "birdcage bar" on that one part of the action ( the bar that operates the damper for that key)

you will be able to hook it up and off the key,

Then you will see that the hammer and other parts of the action is actually only held in with TWO screws, one on the side, and sorry, but one underneath...

Undo these and you can then take off just that hammer and action parts to work on.

Ps, when lifting up and off the birdcage bar for the damper for that hammer, dont lose the felts that will be on it at the bottom, you will see them.

Cheers Rossy, will go and investigate. Piano techs are trying to tell me that the ribbon was not the problem, and I have made things worse by not knowing what I'm doing. They're really helpful over there lol. smile

Back in a bit, with updates/more cry's for help wink

A very good use of the word "should" there Diretonic.

Yes Wayne should have got that, but unfortunately his piano didnt have the secret word on the front that garauntees the help.

Wayne, i will stick around till you have it sorted.

Cheers Rossy, I've had a look, but the birdcage bar only lifts up a tad, because of the wooden beam at the top. Should I screw that off (if poss, not sure if it's also glued in places))

There are screws at the back, I wonder whether just to undo these and see what happens!

yes the magic word is that !! lol.

Yes you have found the screws! The lower two on the same part of the action, this will let you take off just one hammer assembly.

You can safely Bow the bar to get it out wayne, pull it towards you with one hand in the middle while unhooking it at the bottom, if it bends a tad dont fret it springs back.

just noticed the 15 pack of carling; warning: dont start on these till after reassembly.
