I just got a new pc, and it has IE. I don't want to mess about loading up new things til I figure out what I've got.... I'm using windows 8 and it is all new to me, and though fun, a bit confusing sometimes!

I was looking at the Mendelssohn thread this morning and when I tried to play the youtube videos, I got the sound, but not the pictures. I had to go to the youtube site to see the video. I didn't have to do that before (I had Mozilla Firefox on my other computer).

I can't figure out what setting to adjust - can anyone offer a suggestion please?

Thank you.

You should be able to check here or here. Try the latest version in case you have an outdated version. smile

Thanks! Yes, it is installed! And it is the latest version.

(I also learned that it is bundled in IE with Win8)

I know my ActiveX filtering is disabled.
I tried enabling and it didn't help, so I disabled it again.

I'm feeling rather clueless today!

OK, can you see the videos if you go directly to youtube? I recently purchased a laptop with windows 8 and had no such trouble so far.

In any case I recommend installing flash separately even if it is bundled.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Also IE is not the best browser. Try firefox smile

Yes I can see videos on youtube directly.

I liked firefox, I probably will go back, but as I just got this computer I'm trying to get comfortable with what is already on it before I start making changes.

I'll try re-installing.
Thank you.

technology is just a ploy to keep us away from our pianos

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

Don't be afraid to do things, you will never really master your technology if you are too careful. I see a lot of people who seem to be afraid of changing anything in their computer and are sort of afraid of anything more technical, they are just users but they end up being used by their PC in a way because they can't exactly put it to work the way they want.

There is plenty of information on any topic on the internet and it's hard to do anything so damaging that it would cripple your system. Even if you do it's easy to reinstall windows and start over.

Indeed. I like those days when I don't even turn on the laptop. But they are few because I have a job to check on and after checking on things for work I inevitably end up here or facebook. If I want to have a day without PC I'd have to quit work. Sometimes I feel like a prisoner of technology but I don't mind since it's providing for me and sometimes even for my parents when I can spare some money to help them out. So far this is the easiest way to make money. I've worked extremely hard jobs, physically demanding, and I am not going back to that unless I have no other choice. Prefer to use my brain and fingers.

Well. That was interesting. Adobe wouldn't let me choose my location, so I couldn't get to the installation!!!

So...I went to the control panel, disabled flash, re-enabled it, rebooted, and now things are working.

Thanks for the tips and help guys, I appreciate the support.

Teodor, I'm not particularly afraid of trying things on the computer - before my laptop days I even switched video cards, installed modems, I'm generally pretty good with technology, though you might have trouble believing from my post today ! smile

But seriously, my computer isn't even a week old and the new interface is quite different (lovely, but different!)

My next challenge is to figure out why I can't record using the audio jack. I can only use the microphone - which doesn't help me for recording from the digital-silent-mode on my acoustic!
grrr. smile

Sorry I didn't really know what the case is with you I just automatically assumed from your post. I apologize.

You should check out the control panel sound settings and go to the Record tab when your cable is plugged in and see if a new device will show there.

I read a lot of complaints about windows 8 but for me everything I need to use works just fine. And I love how fast it loads when I turn it on.

The only thing missing was the start button in the desktop but I fixed that with a little application.

No apology necessary Teodor! As I said "usually" I'm ok...but I'm just a bit topsy turvy with the new system.

I really like windows 8 as I get on with learning it!

I did look at the control panel for the recording options - I enabled the stero microphone, also did what you suggested, but no dice. From what I've seen on the internet I have to download a driver...

In the meantime, I didn't want to wait any more and have used the old computer to record my recital piece.

Not meaning to hijack your thread Cas but I am having a similar problem with Box.com submissions. Some will show & some give an error "No such user", or something to that effect. Doesn't matter if I'm logged in or not. Computer web site technology cursing (PW Exempt) grin

Nobody reply to this sidetrack please until Cheryl gets squared away.

Rossy I take umbrage at this comment!
I'm not modest.

LOL

But you're right, I am by no stretch of the imagination computer illiterate - which is why the things I can't solve easily drive me absolutely mad!!

If I wanted to show off my computer though, I'd be giving out a lot more details smile
(and actually, it is almost impossible to get a computer WITHOUT Win8 these days...so swanky or not, it very soon won't be anything special.)

Come on cas, where are the details? How big is the hard drive , how much DDR3 memory? etc.

I have win7. I am ancient again.

Well, my last pc had Windows XP and I was using Office 2003.... so I think I was due for an update smile

And no, I'm not going into details.

But if anyone can help with the second problem I have, not being able to get the microphone jack to work for recording...I'd be most appreciative.

And Ragdoll had a question too, about the "no such user" error message from Boxnet when trying to access shared files.

I don't mind doubling up on the usefulness of the thread smile

I've had the same problems, Cheryl... especially if the YT vid is embedded in the PW thread post. When I click on it, I only hear the sound.

Looks like our computer skills are about the same! smile

Take care,

Ricky-J smile
