Our old Kimball just wont stay in tune any longer so its time to replace it. I have found a 1987 Young Chang U-131 It has been tuned and maintained every six months since new $850. I also found a 100th anniversary model 2045 Baldwin, was kept tuned yearly until the last 4 years was left go, $600. While the YC is a Studio and the Baldwin is a basically a tall console I have seen some members here not have much good to say about 25 year old YC. I would welcome any advice I receive.

Thank You Joe

Hi Joe -
When looking at used pianos the brand name means much less than when looking at new ones. I frequently tell customers than a 5 year old Hundai could be a better car than a 5 year old Mercedes. It depends on care and current condition more than how good it was when new. You really should hire a technician to check out these two pianos and determine which one is better. To purchase one or the other based on comments in a forum such as this is to make a decision without hard evidence.

When you give them a test play, which is more to your taste? If one seems too bright or not bright enough relative to the other, you will have to make an educated guess as to the influence of the acoustical environments where you test played the pianos. The piano might suit me perfectly and not be to your taste, just the like the color, the ride, the steering feel, the seating position and the windows of the car I like to drive could be very unpleasant to you. Nobody can answer this for you over the internet. When you find a piano that suits your taste, I would recommend a pre-purchase inspection by a piano tech. If the tech gives the piano a thumbs up you should be on a path towards a good three-way relationship with you, the piano and the tech.

Don, playing the blues in Austin, Texas on a 48" family heirloom Steinway upright, 100 year old 54" Weber upright, unknown make turn of the century 54" upright -- says "Whittier NY" on the plate, Starr, ca. 100 years old full size upright.
