I've already posted about my Riga, that I bought a few months ago.
It was tuned in the beginning of February and I'm planning to call the tuner to come and have a look at it either in May or June, because we still sometimes turn the heat on in the house, and as I know your supposed to tune a piano in the spring about 1 month after the heating season is over (also I'm saving my pennies :D)...
Anyways, I already have a long list in mind of things that I want him to have a look at, not sure if I can afford having all things fixed in one visit . But one thing that I can not live any longer with is the buzzing sheet music stand. I've tried loosening the screws, I've tried tightening them, it doesn't help and I'm out of ideas . I'll upload pictures later of how it's held in place, because now imageshack seems to be acting up...

We really need to SEE the problem.

Buzzing music desks can sometimes be cured with a well-placed piece of felt, sometimes using balance rail bushings to tighten an upright music desk between mounts, or just changing the position of the hinges or twisting the hinge pins slightly.

Lots of ways...but an experienced tech should have no trouble fixing the issue.

Interesting thing: the issue is almost non-existant when the front panel is taken off (fallboard attached). But I can not play it all the time like this, because there would get a lot of dust on the action etc.

Your first post said the buzzing stemmed from the music desk.

Now you say "the issue is almost non-existant when the front panel is taken off".

In other words, it is still there and does not stem from the music desk, no? Or, there could be several buzzes - one in the music desk/front panel, and something else in the piano.

As Jeff said, a competent technician should be able to take care of that without too much trouble. But then, I have personally not worked on a Riga piano before and my hunch is that there could easily be something unusual going on...

Might be a poly to poly squeak on the back side of the tilt out rack... try a thin piece of cloth/felt held in place by friction when you tilt it down. Does that help?

Does it buzz when it is tilted up?

Maybe find one note that makes the buzz and then experiment with your other hand pressing and pulling - it might even turn out that it's not the stand! Buzzes can be tricky...

Oh, I'm pretty sure that it's the sheet music stand buzzing. I've tried holding the hinges and playing buzzing notes and it does stop, while I'm holding it. Of course I've tried positioning it differently, or pushing the whole stand with my hand toward the piano, but it usually doesn't help or it just temporarily stops and then starts buzzing again. I don't know why it almost doesn't buzz when the front panel is removed, maybe it's because the way the sound is projected... Generally when the stand is tilted up it still buzzes, sometimes it doesn't or does less.
I've tried placing paper towels in the gap between the back of the stand and the fallboard, but that didn't help...

Do both hinges buzz or just one?

I've just double checked it - both of them are buzzing.

Have you checked the hinge pins as TunerJeff suggested?

Sounds like its buzzing very well.

With an appropriate drift, tap each hinge pin so as to move it no more than a millimeter. This, as a first resort, often cures that kind of problem.

Well that bit in Russian talks about the soundboard being detached and causing a buzz, but it's not my case, because when the fallboard is removed there's no buzzing.

Try a little linseed oil on the hinge pins. You do not need to take the pins out. Just put a little where the leaves rub against each other.

Maximillyan: I think that you mean "delaminated," (layers of veneer coming apart), rather than "exfoliated" (material shed from the surface, like dead skin).

If you press against the music shelf, you also apply some pressure to the key cover (fallboard). It could just as well be the hinge of the key cover itself. You said that if you remove the front panel, the buzz is almost gone. This could be because the key cover probably rests in a slightly different position, which could put a different strain on its hinge, eliminating the buzz.

I would remove the music shelf from the key cover [edit: temporarily, that is] to determine whether the buzz is actually in the shelf or its hinges. And carefully tighten all hinge screws, both those of the music shelf and those of the key cover. Fix those that are stripped.
