The home of Alfred Dolge, author, inventor, and maker and supplier of piano parts is up for sale. Located in Dolgeville NY, on Dolge Avenue... 12,000 square feet, 22 bedrooms on 2,5 riverside acres. Wow (understatement).

I have suggested the PTG buy this piano-historic place (which is going for a song) and move their headquarters there. wink What an amazing place for a piano museum! Heck, if a few of us technicians pooled some money, we could create a veritable piano technicians commune there! thumb

check it out:

Well the 22 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms would be a problem I think.. It looks like my kind of house if it were only situated in a state where the average winter high was closer to 70 degrees. I betcha the heat bill is a doozy!

The PTG should buy it and establish a retirement community. I'll come visit you Jurgen!

That estate is certainly designed with a Victorian Temperament in mind.

It seems that based on the price it must be in horrendous condition. Either that or the location is not desirable. A studio apartment of less than 1000 sq. feet in NYC can cost more although NYC real estate is very expensive.

My service area includes Dolgeville, and I drive by the mansion often. You can even see Richfield Springs on the map. smile

This is a very rural area, so for that price, the house better be immaculate. As for the weather, we have 2 seasons in central New York State...July and winter.

Check out the peeling ceiling paint in the parlor. But, it's still a lot of house.

It probably has plaster ceilings and walls, which are very common here. Many homes in this area look similar to the mansion, although of course on a smaller scale.

Oh lordieee! Tell me the "commune" wouldn't be populated by a bunch of old tuner-codgers, each one trying to outdo the other with tales of numbers of pianos tuned for the super famous piano concertinaas, and the piles of money they made as a result. Yikes!

We should buy the Dolgeville mansion, and also buy the Steinway Mansion, which is still up for sale: http://ny.curbed.com/tags/steinway-mansion

If you get tired of hearing some old tuner's warstories, you can put in for a transfer to PTG Villa South and hear the same thing as told by a different tuner.

It's hard to tell with these big old mansions. Sometimes they end up just being torn down. We had one here in Cincinnati, that was built by one of the founders of Procter and Gamble. He was the inventor of Ivory Soap. It was just demolished recently. There was a group of preservationists who put up a big fight. You can do a search for Gamble House to read about the whole debacle.

That's a shame. Luckily the other Gamble house, in Pasadena, California, has been preserved and is open to the public for tours. It's a magnificent Craftsman mansion, the house, furnishings, hardware and landscaping all designed by the sublime architects, Greene & Greene. One item inside will catch PianoWorld members' eye: a Baldwin upright with a Greene & Greene-designed case. The house was built in nine months by a crew of thousands of workers, if I remember right -- maybe two thousand?

Well worth a trip,

Andy

Yeah, I think maybe PTG timeshares would be the ticket... Palm Springs, Vegas, Maui, Cabo.... ah, heck: Seychelles!

Yup, that's the one. The horizontal motif on the front is called the "cloud lift", borrowed from Japanese design. You'll see the same motif repeated throughout the house.

Greene & Greene designed the carpets, too.

Hey Andy. It looks like you live in the area. If you like these types of places, have you been to Laurel Court? It's about a block from my house. Here is the Laurel Court website. They rent it out for weddings and other events now. You can schedule a tour. I walk past it all the time, but haven't done the tour. I have heard about the ornate old Steinway grand. I think they might have a couple Steinway grands. Some years ago, Tony Geers told me that he had rebuilt a Steinway and delivered it there. The people had lived in an ordinary house in the suburbs when he picked it up. Then when it came time for delivery, they had moved to Laurel Court.

Hi Roy,

Yes, I live about one and a quarter hours' drive north of Laurel Court, but I'd never heard of it till now. I'll keep it in mind for the next time we're looking for something to do down that way.

My wife and I assumed responsibility for a rather plainer but very large 1850's house in Xenia for quite a few years and have come to look at ancient brickpiles with a somewhat jaundiced eye -- but also with renewed respect for the work required to keep them going.

Have you ever toured the Louis Bromfield house at Malabar Farm State Park, near Mansfield? It's not such a grand house but has a fascinating history. I played the Wedding March on the large Steinway there on which some other pianist presumably played it when Humphrey Bogart married Lauren Bacall in that hall. Bromfield was annoyed when the local telephone operator leaked the news of the wedding, so he bought the phone company.

Andy

Nice house...
There's always hidden work to be done in those houses.. even in NEW houses as my Pop can attest to trying to keep his rentals up back in the '70s. That's where I learned how to be a plumber, painter, and how to jack up a house!

That house has style! Class! and would be a great place for old codgers.. er piano tuners/technicians. Grin!
